Tatou?

Fairly sure this isn't the right place to post this, so apologies in advance, but...

I know there have been numerous non-english RuneQuest fanzines and magazines over time, but I only recently learnt of a french-language 'zine called Tatou, covering (the Chaosium games) RQ, Stormbringer, Elric, Hawkmoon etc.

I managed to get hold of one early issue, and from what I can see, it looks very interesting...except it's in French, which unfortunately I can read only a little of.

Has anyone - with greater linguistic ability than myself, which doesn't necessarily say much :? - ever attempted a translation of this magazine series? If so, where can I get hold of it? For that matter, has there ever been an english-language edition as far as anyone knows?

Help and advice would be appreciated, so thank you in advance.

I had a copy once and it was pretty good reading. I did translate some of the articles, poorly, but that was a long, long time ago and I don't have the files.

But, if you can get them translated, they are very good, for their time.

I own 24 out of the 26 issues of this magazine (missing no. 1 and 19).

But beware, i am german, and can´t speak french at all!

I have this magazines in my collection... well... because i am a collector (with the whole french RQ line in my collection).

The illustrations look great, and what i can tell from the few words i could recognise the themes of the articles sound promising.

But i had so much to read in english, when i discovered the french magazines, i had no need to actually read them. :-)

By the way: "Broos", the RQ fanzine by the people that later founded Multisim, and published the french language edition of Hero Wars, seems to be much more interesting than the Tatou magazine (but Brros is RQ only, without Eternal Champion).

Cheers

Thank you for your responses, gentlemen.

I'll look out for examples of both of these magazines, and try using a translator-program to at least start the procedure of conversion - although the number of non-recognised words will no doubt be staggering...

I'll report back if I manage to get anything useful from my attempt!

Thanks again,

Carl Q.

I own most of the issues of Tatou. It was the official magazin of Oriflam the French licensor of RuneQuest, Stormbringer and Hawkmoon.

It's VERY good, especially the Hawkmoon and Stormbringer/Elric material, which is 100% original.

The many Hawkmoon scenarios and background articles should be particularly interesting, since there is comparatively little for Hawkmoon in English. Some early Stormbringer scenarios like "Le Roi des Limbes" (King of Limboes) are also very good.

The RQ Gloranthan stuff is partly translated from English articles from various magazines (such as AH's Heroes), there is however an interesting original mini-campaign set in Sartar and the Holy Country, which spans several issues.

Here you find many Hawkmoon articles in electronic form, just in case you would like trying to babelfish them:

See below the first lines of a scenario, freshly translated from a 1993 issue of Tatou...

THE TOWER OF VARNA ZAK
It scenario do not require a group adventurers very powerful, on the other hand it will call upon good direction and with the talents of adaptation of your players. It illustrate too what must to be science in Hawkmoon, with to know some thing of one not very insane and baroque.

Possible introductions
Characters could be confronted with the Tower Which Rolls of several ways. In here detailed some ones.

Fortuitous meeting
At the time of the one of theirs many displacements, them characters will be intrigued by one gigantic cloud of dust rising at the horizon. In bringing closer, they will be able to realize that it is acted in fact of a tower rolling in their direction. If they approach, they will fall into a ambush assembled by porcine hunters, with the need supported by some hard. They are intended to be sacrificed in Stop Demon Varna Zak.

The Devastated Village
Characters meet what remains of a village devastated by the passage of the Tower Who Rolls. This one crushed all residences and some of inhabitants. There are some survivors to cry and bury deaths, and who will be able to tell them the arrival tower right in the middle of the night. They had initially believed in the thunder but they heard thereafter noises of gallops.

Well it's not exactly pleasant to read ... but if you need an Hawkmoon adventure really badly...

Tatou was a great magazine. I still own the ten first issues, and couldn't imagine being apart from them. They present some great campaign materials. I particularly like Glorantha's campaign described above, and indeed all the Hawkmoon and Stormbringer articles included.

As it was told there most RQ articles in Tatou (that is excepted the 1st 2-4 issues) were a translation of those found in The Tales of The reaching Moon and I think one piece came from the zine Runequest Adventures.
Most of the other works though (for Hawkmoon, Stormbringer and Pendragon) was original publication.

But if your mostly interested in Hawkmoon, you should consider learning French as a good investment because they published many books on this RPG and covered all of Europe from France and Granbretan to the Kingdoms of the East, Scandia and Spanya.
But you should hurry because some of these books are becoming scarce.

As well, it's good to know that the fanzine "Lancefeu", which has only two issues and treats exclusively of Hawkmoon, is a great resource for any Hawkmoon game (in French of course).

Dear All,

Yup, there are heaps of 'Hawkmoon' source books - c. 15-16 of them (I lose track, but have them all in any case). They cover most parts of Europe in great detail (except mainland Italy), and are a fantastic resource.

I recommend learning French.

Best regards

Up to three, now... Issue 3 is a Granbretan Special.

Hi,
Those magazines were very good, with 100% french materials for Stormbringer/Elric, Hawkmoon & Runequest. At this time (the 80's and 90's) the Chaosium games were very popular and the old Hawkmoon was a big success.

If you want there is a kind of french "Noble Knight Games" on the web, called Ludik Bazar.
You may find a lot of Tatou here : http://www.ludikbazar.com/index.php?cPath=49_3167_450&sort=2a&language=en
Of course it's for the Chaosium version of those games.
I hope it will help you.

My favorite Tautou is here: http://www.imdb.com/gallery/ss/0301199/2136.jpg.html?path=pgallery&path_key=Tautou%2C%20Audrey&seq=58
