Yeah, I'd agree. Taking out one of the Big Three memorials [Washington, Jefferson, or Lincoln, I'm partial to Lincoln myself -- go fig] definitely would be a stab at the heart of the US.
And God help your unhappy ass if it was found out to be on purpose.
Most of the statues of Ankor Watt have been cut off at the ankles so that some rich asshole can own one.
And more than one American serviceman was busted for looting antiquities in Iraq. I happen to know one of them. He got a dishonorable discharge after 15 years' service and almost went to Federal prison.
The looting of religious artifacts has been common since long before monotheism became a thing. It's what the poets and historiographers mean when stele inscriptions read 'I cast down their temples'. And every civilization has done it.
I do want to point out one thing about my friend, btw... I have to give him credit where it's due: When he got busted he didn't bitch, whine or complain. He admitted what he did was wrong and took responsibility for what he did. He shielded the lower enlisted he encouraged to help him by taking most of the blame and did everything he could to recover the artifacts. That doesn't mitigate what he did, but at least he acted like an adult when he got caught.
