NovaQuest: Mankind's Quest for the Stars

Should have something with a bit more meat on in the next preview in 2-3 weeks time (including an example alien stats page and a look at either the weapons or spacecraft rules) ;)

Best estimate is around November for release, so there should be a couple more previews between now and then!

My only complaint is that there is not much new for the members of this board. I fully realize we are not your primary target audience, but much of the preview is standard rules stuff we are all (perhaps too) familiar with.

What is new I like, the background sounds good and I like the subskills (very reminiscent of Ringworld).

Thats a bit of an unfair assessment really, if he put too much of the 'new' stuff in the preview its open to abuse if you kwim.

That is why I framed the comment in the perspective as a board member. He has discussed other mechanics on this board and I have followed them and been a part of the discussions.

I fully realize that the target for the preview is not us. I was just voicing my honest opinion. For me there was slightly over one page of new material fo me - and was saying for purely selfish reasons - which I admitted - that I was hoping for more.

Would you like to see some of the old ship rules to see about adapting them for space (the new rules in the companion appear to be similar)? Or do you have something else all worked out?

We've got something at near-playtest quality but obviously it's always better not to reinvent the wheel unless it's got corners ;)

Which book are they in?

RQ3 GM's book. SOme farily similar (but not identical) ship handling rules were put out in the Whtie Worf book for Strombringer as well. In generall most off the stuff could be adpated fairly easily, although seaworthiness would need to be renamed to something like Atmopsheric seal or some such, but the Hull Quality and Structure Points should port over nicely. Oh, and ships will have to move faster than 7kph or so, but I bet you figured that part out already.

I could send you some scans for evaluation purposes , without feeling guilty about it. It's only a couple of pages, an dit is to help you design something.

Say, what is NQ gonna cost?

Oh, nitpick away :)

Actually both Chambers and the Oxford English Dictionary defines brackets as marks used in printing to group several words together, including both () round brackets (aka parentheses) and [] square brackets.

I usually prefer saying "brackets" unless it really matters which type, as you never know when someone is going to edit your () into [] (or vice-versa) and not notice your specific reference in the text as to which type.
I think calling them brackets or parentheses is another British/American thing.

Thanks for the offer :) I know someone who has that though so I can go borrow the book during the week.

Tough one to say at the moment.

If I said $20 for the 192-page PDF, $25 for a softcover printed version, and $35 for the special edition hardback - what would you say?

If you PM me a mailing adress I could probably mail you one of my six copies of RQ3 that are just sitting in a box.

I'd say you'd been watching Star Trek reruns. :D That was a "Spock" answer. "Tough to say, approximately 7432.427 to one". :D Good sized book too.

sounds about right... Just, please, be kind ink-wise... if you use colored backgrounds, include a low-ink version in the PDF... Y'know black on white 'cept the illos. (That's my biggest gripe about the trek PDF's by Decipher... they're just darned Ink-hogs, and require full-color printing.)

Man, I think I know you from TrekRPG. :D

Oh, and I'd second that, but I noticed that the interior pages are all in B&W and formatted printer friendly already.

Already on this one :D

Bless Adobe InDesign's "layers" facility, which allows creation of a single file with some bits that go in the print version, and others in the PDF ;)

The big black starfield border on the outside page edges will be removed from the final PDF version. Pages will be b/w text to match the printed book. The main galactic map will be in b/w in the book+PDF with a free hi-res colour version downloadable as well*. Ship diagrams will be as close to "lines with light shading" as we can get them, so no huge patches of black ink to burn up.

If we do use any colour it would be in section headings and the like, and would be done in such a way that the greyscale version comes out readable.

*- I'm toying with the idea of putting the colour version of the map on the back cover, rather than artwork and blurb. We have those two whole sides of colour in the whole book so it seems a shame to waste them...

I've not been on TrekRPG in YEARS... since the end of LUG-Trek...

I'm thinking of working up RQ Prime Directive CG, etc.

I hang out on the traveller boards, mostly. COTI, Traveller5,com, etc.

I dunno, I kind of like the way they reinvented the wheel in those Volvic water adverts

Burn a POW whilst in the shockwave? I think it would be good enough match for destruction and/or creation. Quite possibly light, as well.
