I clearly have to vote for the expanded Gamebook rules.
In my opinion this version would appeal to two important roleplayer groups:
1) The Newbies. As mentioned earlier in this thread, an expanded version of the gamebook rules would make it easier for readers of the books to switch to real roleplaying. Another factor is that the market totally lacks a real Newbie-system right now.
2) The roleplaying veterans. I have noticed that most roleplayers move from rules-heavy systems to rules-lite systems when they get older because the ROLEplaying becomes more and more important to them. This game is about the ROLE not about the ROLL. So an easy to handle system would really appeal to them.
So it's possible to get the Newbies AND the old hardcore fanbase? Right! So just go for it!
