New from Darrian Discount Ships!

Hey Barnes, are you going to make it steamlined and all smoothy ? I can give you some pointers if you like ?

So much easier to build a 3D model when you have the plans... mind you I do it the other way round sometimes...

edit>

Ooops so you are streamlining it... learn the lathing!

Any help would be awesome! :)

The thing about designing the ship is that not only can others be able to see what the thing looks like, but also it makes me smile to see something I created gain substance. Also my gf loves scifi and showing her a pic saying "thats our starship", really gets her into the game too.

Looking better guys, not sure it's quite what zero was shooting for re the upper/lower alignment.

Far-trader, what pgm do you use for this deck plan? Nice and clean.

I'll say more later but.

Wings, draw two arcs together like the wing profile, then loft to create the length... alas you have a flat end.
So instead I use the draw dome plugin to make a wing tip, the scale it flater then loft... see If I can make a diagram later.

If you look at the Nolg fighter on the blog you can see I had to lathe to make the main hull. Thats draw a line that the the line of the hull length ways then draw a circle 90 degrees to, then use the follow 'me tool' and that line will 'lathe' 360 degrees....

Actually that is AndrewW's work (a bit earlier in the thread), all I did was drop it into Paint for a quick-n-dirty cut-n-paste edit. You'll have to ask him what he did it in originally. Or maybe he'll see the question here. I agree it's got a nice look to it.

Who me¿

Nope, I don't see a thing.

Though I use the same program I've been using, have mentioned it at least a couple of times before on the forum... (Inkscape).

Inkscape! That's it. Sure you've mentioned it. I even noticed but only remembered when you said it again :) Sometimes my memory feels not so much shorter as actively shrinking ;)

Anyway, again, nice work! Hope you didn't mind me messing with it.

Thanks. Good stuff. I'm relegated to mostly Paint cut-n-paste myself.

We will just have to install more memory.

Thanks. Nah, that's ok though I can make changes if some are desired.

How to Lathe...

Please note I have switched show hidden geometry on and if you want the objects to be less blocky ie higher polys, edit the number of segments using right click > entity info > segments – you cannot do this on the finished object, only the circle and the arcs in this example.

A. Draw your shape of the hull, it may help to draw it in 1 half then copy and add to the other – I used the line and arc tool to make the flat shape. Keep that shape and copy (move tool and Ctrl) You can use that shape later and for the deck plan or create that shape from the deckplan...

B. Draw a line from the centre of the flat shape and draw a circle 90 degrees to it (green axis) – delete the line after, you don’t need it, just its easy to draw the circle from the end of the line.

C. Click the circumference of the circle, so it goes blue. This is the path. Then with the circumference selected, click the ‘follow me too’l then the shape – you should see the object i.e. hull appear!

D. After this you have a nice hull, using the rubber tool+ctrl or the smooth/soften edges you can get rid of any lines (right click to get that) I then scale it. Really this is all up to you what you do.

E. I chop the hull in half. It is so much easier to work on the hull in half.

Not bad for a sore head...

Awesome. I may have a go at doing the far trader using that. Would it work with more of a flat shape? would you just use a big circle?
Can you use it for two decks?

Not thought why the circle... I tried it with another shape, it just goes wrong..just plane wrong, like jedward...

Flatten, squeeze the finished shape, cut it in half (you have to draw a plane or box 90 degrees to the shape and put it in the middle then hit intersect with model > which you get my selected all the model + plane then right click > then delete the bits you don't want.)

That 1st shape is the crux. You can do a lot with it.

Hmm like this: 5 min kitbash...

Next I'll show you the intersect feature and how to make a wing or a sphere.. without the plugin.

Um a couple comments about Darrian design, eh, principles.
1. small and I mean small cabins and large communal spaces.

2. Safety is paramount, sorry, no way in h*** they'd build a chemical rocket system as primary propultion, wouldn't be allowed to land either.

They like to have backups for thier backups. Example, wrist chrono.A. Battery. B. Kinetic auto-winding. C. Solar. D. good old wind up knob. All on the same watch. Paranoia in tech standards left over from the Megizh.

3. You got lifting wings so that's covered.

4. not many straight lines in the interior spaces, they preffer an organic design feel, curved walls etc. thye do use plants as part of the enviromental system, both for LS and for that "I'm not really in a metal box" smell.

5. The exterior of the ship would be smooth flowing shapes and aerodynamic in nature.

6. frankly I don't think the Darrians would allow any corporation or individual to build a "scrap yard" ship, and if they did, it would not have anything that said Darrian on it anywhere.

Just my take and observations. For what its worth there is a Darrian world that is not part of the Darrian government..........They might see or allow this sort of frankenship.

Comments taken. The eventual redesign will have a reactionless drive (TL 9) at Thrust 2 using the High Guard rules and slight changes in other places due to the price increase of that one part.

I was not responsible for design but I will defend those who were as they had done a better job than I could have myself. Please feel free to come up with designs once I update (probably next week now).

The ship is purposed not necessarily for Darrians to use but more as a good yet very cheap ship for those who dont mind putting saving before quality, that happens to be built by the Darrians on Planet Darrian. Why this thing would be built is up to the GM, but the thing is (and will be when updated) a good ship for the cost.
