The Prefect problem, and a possible fix

Smegish

Mongoose
The Prefect is generally seen as one of the cheesier ships in the game, and as a Centauri player myself even I can see its a bit over the top. I suppose there are a few potential ways to fix this problem:

1) Remove it completely (and I imagine theres quite a few non-centauri players who would welcome this)

2) Cut it down a bit and leave it as a Raid choice (amongst the pile of other raid choices for centauri)

OR

3) Upgrade it a little and make it a Battle choice

So I offer my version of Option 3:

Prefect-class Armoured Cruiser (Centurion Variant) Battle
Speed: 8 ..... Damage: 40/10 . Craft: None
Turn: 1/45 ... Crew: 45/12 ...... Special Rules: Interceptors 2, Jump Point
Hull: 6 ......... Troops: 2 ........... In Service: 2243+

Weapon ............. Range .. Arc .. AD ... Special
Battle Laser ......... 25 ....... F ..... 4 ..... Super AP, Beam, Double Damage
Matter Cannon ..... 12 ....... F ..... 8 ..... AP, Double Damage
Twin Particle Array. 8 ........ F .... 10 .... Twin-Linked
Twin Particle Array. 8 ........ P ..... 6 ..... Twin-Linked
Twin Particle Array. 8 ........ S ..... 6 ..... Twin-Linked

Basically thought of it to be an alternative to the Primus/Tertius, with more focus on the Matter Cannon/TPA then the Battle Lasers. I added the interceptors to give it some extra survivability, with it not having much damage or crew for a Battle level ship.

Your stats are pretty much what i think the Tertius should be.
I'd would keep the Centurions weapon loadout out on the Prefect except where the Prefect has less. I think the Prefect has slightly less Twinlink dice fwd. Probably need to drop the hits as well.

Too many Centauri hulls that all have the same balance issue that all fundamentally look the same .... you almost get a perfect continuum from Sulust to Prefect to Magnus to Centurion .... removing some excess variants just makes sense.

some of the variants that were there for variants sake you will find missing by the time of 2e.
and yes reaverman it will still be in your rules, but as Matt keeps putting stuff in S&P from 2e playtesting you may find the prefect could go missing earlier :p

(sneaks into reavermans house whilst hes working and blacks out the prefect) see its gone :)

you sure you want to sneak into reavermans house? he's very protective of his pies you know, you'll never make it out alive!

well as long as i leave the pies alone I will be ok, in fact if i take a few extra that will work as a distraction

Even though I play Centauri, and I do use the Tertius, I refuse to use the Prefect, it is too cheesy. Just plain getting rid of it sounds like the best idea.

lol you used 2 against me Kremmen :)
and its no more cheesy than the drakh light cruiser, which has precise as well, and all round weapons.
its not that cheesey cos i beat a 4 prefect fleet in the same tourney.

Beatable doesnt mean its not cheesy. As I've said before I dont actually think the Prefect OR Tertius are actuallybroken as such, but they are severely bent at least ;)

exactly. there were a lot of centauri ships doing the same job only some were clearly better.
the pruning shears have been at the fanheads.....

Excellent stuff. The Centauri list always seemed a bit "why is that variant better then a hull designed for the job". Some of the best example of variants are the Tigara / Teshlan and Altarian / Elutarian. Basically completely changing the role of the ship to fill a gap in the fleet.

With regards to Smegish's firts post option 3 is still a far superior choice for the roles of a Sulust AND an Altarian.

This is how real militaries do things. It's much cheaper to refit a ship with a new role in mind than it is to design and build a totally new unit. No reason why the Centauri shouldn't have a long-range missile ship, and no reason why it shouldn't be a variant of an existing design. Since it's just a weapons refit it isn't unreasonable at all.

to fill in gaps thats fnie, the problem was the centauri had so many raid ships and variants that some were doing exactly the same job as each other, variants for the sake of it. these are the types of variants that have been pruned.

As long as the essential roles are being filled, that's fine. Hopefully the new ships will actually fit their roles, like the Sulust being an escort destroyer instead of a cruiser in its own right...
