What's the advantage of mounting spinal meson guns rather than particle beams? Damage seems roughly comparable between the two weapon types (sometimes favouring the p-beam based on size and TL and never varying more than around 1DD) and the latter weapons are immune to screens, have a longer range and have enough AP to make anything less than TL20+ warships effectively naked against their attacks. Since the beams are also cheaper, why bother with the OTL's iconic capital ship weapons at all?
Has anyone addressed this before? I checked the forum and nothing leaped out at me, but I'm new.
If the beams lacked the AP, would that make their competitors good enough to justify their price? With weapons over around 1-2DD armour is mostly worthless, but since it takes roughly 20-30 shots with a mid-range spinal mount to kill a cruiser maybe it would add up. It seems like a slightly boring thing to play out, though.
