Shadows

My ACTA group thought that the Shadow ships died too easy. We thought that giving all the Shadow ships adaptive armor would solve the problem but I think adaptive armor might have made the Shadows too powerful. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

Shadow Ships do die easily, yes. The trick is to use your SM to avoid fire, and run away to regenerate if you take a beating. Asteroid fields (and all other scenery) are your friend. Shadows are not an easy race to get right. Adaptive Armour would make them way overpoweed.

A lot of people have a tendancy to play on battlefields with little or no terrain.....as noted, shadows are the ultimate hit-and-run experts; you need something to run behind!

A hunter will recover 10-11 hitpoints per turn, and fights with full effect until destroyed - if you're getting hammered, RUN! If you make it behind cover with even 1 hit point remaining you can repair back to a fighting state.

The trick is to manage to get in close without giving away shots from boresight lasers (not easy as you're going to be short of initiative sinks)

Take a reasonable number of scouts and lurk behind cover. Let them come to you rather than trying to cross no-mans land.

Also, shadows excel in any mission where the objective is more subtle than just killing the enemy fleet; recons, blockade runs, assasination, etc - and they are possibly the most disgusting fleet to be ambushed by in a campaign.

We tried exactly the same in my group with giving them adaptive armour, but they became ridiculously good. Fits the feel of the show, but not so much fun to play against as it became more of a how long can I survive against them game.
Armageddon by boosting their damage and tweaking the odd stat here or there went some way to fixing them in my opinion though.
Be interesting to see what happens when they and the vorlons move to the ancients style damage system in 2E though. I imagine they’ll have to be restated again, but at least the book keeping will be easier.

But they went up a PL too... except the scout, which got hit hard by the stealth change!

The hunter has better stats than the old Shadow ship of the same priority level though, faster, more hits better gun etc.

Not if you use the Tournament lists, which were supposedly more balanced. The new Hunter is worse than the old Ship. Same AD, less fighters, less damage points, weapon went from T arc to F and lost 3" range.

Ah I only use the list in the Armageddon book so that would explain the diference in perceptions on it.

The tournament lists were better for the most part but the tournament shadow hunter was broken Im afraid. Simple as that.

There are very few ships I will labels as flat out broken but the tourney hunter was one of them.

So was the tourney and original armageddon Saggitarius.

The tourney Vorlon heavy cruiser was cutting it very close but thats a little more iffy.

A Friend Ken came joint first and then second in his first two tournaments with Shadows (5 Scouts) and had played at most 10 games prior..............

He played them well and they rewarded him - even on tables with no terrain................git

:D

Anyone tried to GEG the Shadows? Might be effective and not as powerful as AA vs the big beams we see take shadows apart....might 'feel' right.

Well from what I know of 2nd ed (and yeah I know this is a cop out 'wait for 2nd Ed answer) Shadows are getting a new 'shield' mechanic which should work a bit like their old B5Wars damage abosorption capabilities :)

I personally am content to wait for this, as while it WILL be better and feel more like I think Shadows SHOULD feel, theyre already a very good force as they stand if used right :)

people keep talking about the hunter it is being removed from the shadow fleet list. it was stated by the mongoose guy that the hunter is now a pcicorps ship. going with the omega shadow half breed thing.

I am curious as to what you mean by broken. I come from a card gaming community where broken means far too powerful and unbalanced because of it.

I have noticed however on this forum people use the phrase the other way round...

Ah, yes... the diffusers.

Well, if we are lucky MP will drop the whole priority level thing and go to point values...

Anyway, I haven't played as or against the Shadows, but from what I hear here... they can often times dissapoint. Yeah, you can win... but it's tough.

Oh well. If they were the UBER-ships we saw on the show we would ALL be playing as Shadows, wouldn't we?

Its still in now - reading between the lines - the new Shadow Hunter is prob a different ship in the PSICorp list and the Shadow ship comes in two sizes - one with present stats (or 2nd Ed version) and the other with Hunter (or 2nd Ed version) stats. Ready to be corrected by the more informed! :)

Hopefully they (and the Vorlons) get some more choices to play with - everybody else gets plenty of ships that are not seen on the show.........
