Math is hard...A question from the Stygian sourcebook.

Dpetroc

Mongoose
Okay -- I'm missing something. In the back of the Stygia sourcebook they have a listing for the Temple Harlot of Idriss. The sample is that of a 5th level scholar. However, there are six feats listed. The NPC model clearly is a sorcerous one as she has three sorcery styles.

What am I missing with my math here or is this an error?

Thank you.

Its an NPC, it doesnt have to follow the rules exactly. Only PCs are so structured.

Rules lawyer I'm not, but that seems both a) inconsistent and b) just plain sloppy. An extra feat for a non-standard class sure. But three? That's not simply being relaxed for NPC's.

Also, I like my NPC's to be casual as well, but if you are structuring an antagonist, you should apply the same standards as PC generation. Otherwise you're weighting the balance against your players.

I was just wondering if I'd missed something for that NPC type. If I haven't then it was just poorly written up.

I see your point I suppose, in that as an official NPC listed in the rules it should apply to the same rules as a PC but honestly I dont see why it matters. From what Im hearing from other Conan GMs it really doesnt matter. So what if you award a few Feats that give the NPC the abilties you percieve they should have, even though they have the Hit Points and Skill levels of a lesser NPC? So what if your 8th level NPC only has 2 feats? Does it really matter in the end? Hopefully youve considered how this is going to play out in the game and if your looking for an even match up with the players (Such is not always the intention when making up NPCs, sometimes you want the opponants to be easypickings, sometimes you want the players to realize they need to RUN!) you should be able to wing that even if the NPCs stats arent perfectly "legal".

[rgrove0172]Whilst for your own games I see no problem in generating an NPC as you wish, in the rulebooks the provided NPCs should _certainly_ match the character generation rules. Moreover, Mongoose are quite strict about the NPCs being correct (see their writing guidelines).

[Sgt Zim]It's strange that your copy lists 6 feats, though, because my copy only has 5 feats - Iron Will for Scholar/5, plus 2 others for Levels 1 and 3 (presumably Carouser and Debaucher) and 2 more for Favoured Class levels 1 and 5 (presumably Improved Grapple and Improved Unarmed Strike).

Sorry, didnt mean to push the point to hard. I did agree with you both though that as an "official" NPC, it should have been worked out correctly.

THAT'S what I was looking for. Favored Class....fergot that. THANK you!
