Conan Plans Unveiled - Deepest Apologies

Being a huge fan of LOTR, I looked ag the game, and stoped and wondered, wheres the game? Just a whole lot of very little, and not cheap either.

An atlas by Vincent. I wouldn't care less to wait an year or two for them, I would get them as soon as they were out. It was indeed a dream project, one that would probably become the best sourcebook for a setting ever.

And now it's gone. I haven't felt this disappointed ever since Earthdawn 1st Edition was canceled.

Mongoose, your plans were indeed epic. An multi-book atlas would be a dream come true to most, if not all, of us. And by Vincent!

You have my support, for the little it does. I couldn't care less if Conan remained in D20 or moved to another system, I play to have fun and tell a tale, and the Hyborian Age is the perfect setting to tell a tale. To have this pulled under from everyone like this... It is indeed sad.

I hope the license holders can be convinced of letting the plans go on as planned original. Giving Mongoose the license was the best thing they've done in, well, ever, since for the first time faithful material to the spirit of Howard was coming out for the Hyborian Age.

Man, why is it that the best things always meet an untimely end?

Well, from what Ive read, the thing was light on both fluff AND crunch. And besides Conan, an LOTR game is one of the few where I WILL read the fluff to it and enjoy it.

What was in it? Was the magic system weak and the monsters or what?

A friend of mines son started writeing and conducting games for other kids when he was aboput 10-12. At first look through the rules felt like that. Very rules light that did not capture the feel of LOTR.

And the fluff looked more like movie trivia than background to middle earth. As I collected every one of ICEs mod at one time or another, it would be fair to say I am a dedicated collecter of Middle Earth stuff. That was not worth the effort.

As a long time advocate for MRQ Conan, I'm very disappointed that we came so close, but didn't quite get there.

I would like to applaud for their vision though. It is a brilliant idea. Several core books and a series of systemless atlases that would appealed to gamers and non-gaming Conan fans alike.

It is hard to read this kind of news and not getting pesimistic, not only all the involved staff hard work is trashed, but Conan`s fanbase (and clients!) is sabotaged in such an unethical way!

After seeing what marketing "specialists" can do to some beloved franchises via Hollywood, one can only wonder what is going to happen to REH`s legacy, specially since Mongoose`s professionalism has been repaid in such a harsh way by the license holders...

Still, my group will stick to Mongoose`s Conan until the books fall apart (and then some more!).

IIRC Decipher only had the license to create an RPG from the movies and no other materials.
May be the rpg license should be split, MGP keeping the rights for all the books and written materials (original writings, comics, ...etc) and a to be announced company having the right to do a movie rpg a la Decipher.

This way, MGP could be able to proceed on their plan and somebody else will be able to get some cash from the movie license usage.

I was gone for two days and got back to find shattering news!

The three systems approach was a good thing for the license and I would have bought all them. I've been waiting for the MRQ version for years and, though I was unaware of its development, the Savaged version would have made a perfect companion to the Pinnacle's Solomon Kane book. I guess my dreams will be haunted by this leatherbound Conan MRQ for a while!

(...And it would have been a good thing to see this forum free from D20 despotism too!)

And the Atlases by Darlage would have been a must for every Conan fan around, going far beyond the narrow scope of the roleplaying community, having the potential to reach the MMO players, comics and movie fans as well as any REH fan around the world! I hope you'll find some way to publish them!

I trusted the people at Mongoose must as disappointed as we are, having put a huge amount of work in this project. I respect REH and his work as much as everyone here, but it seems the people at Conan Properties are real suckers...

I'll keep on supporting the line and the people at Mongoose whatever game engine they are using, as I did from the start. I'm an REH and Conan fan before being a (system X) blind fanboy and I want to thank again every one at Mongoose for the quality of their work.

Of course it wasn't perfect, as perfection is not a thing from this world, there was this map issue that was becoming like a recurring joke, the binding problems that happened a few years ago (that you guys handled magnificently!), the cut contents of the regional books and a few minor annoyances, but in overall, the Conan line has been so far among the best produced by any RPG company, even if, as every regular user of these boards knows, I'm far from being a huge fan of the munchkin system currently in use.

Thanks for all you guys.

By this Goose I rule!

This is bad news indeed. I would've bought the Atlases in a heartbeat and I would have been very interested in both of the new Conan rpgs. Let's hope the license holders change their minds!

I would have bought all the books, and ultimately choose the game system with the prettiest women.

It looked like a great idea. Independent source books and three rule systems. Everybody would have won.

Imagine if Conan ends up with Hasbro (4th edition D&D).

Cheers,
Brisco.

All power to the Mongoose Team!

About these news: All cash come from Hollywood and not the petty cashflow from RPGs. Everything about the Conan license is done from that perspective. End of Story. Though I remember Fredrik Malmberg at Paradox talking about the very good job Mongoose did with this license and that it was very much appreciated!

Thanks for your work...

Meaning, I'll try anything but 4th edition.

Regardless of the rule system, I like what Mongoose puts out.

Best of luck to Mongoose. I hope all the artists and writers get paid for the time invested, and Mongoose doesn't suffer financially as a result. Paying for something you can't sell is not fun.

Brisco again.

I sent this email fwiw...

Dear Paradox

Recently on the Mongoose publishing (Conan RPG) forums the news was related that Paradox had pulled plans to allow Mongoose to publish 3 new Conan RPG products scheduled for release in 2010.

These are:

1. A Savage Worlds system Conan RPG
2. A leather bound Runequest system Conan RPG
3. A Conan world Atlas by the Conan authority, Vincent Darlarge

I would like to register my great dissapointment that it seems this incredibly bold, innovative and exciting production schedule will not now come to pass.

These products would with certainity have been great commercial successes and would have hugely increased the audience for the Conan franchise.

I sincerely hope you take the opportunity to revise this decision and allow Mongoose to do what they do best: produce excellent gaming products for the Conan world for old and new fans alike.

Yours sincerely

I haven't read the full thread, but I offer you my deepest sympathy. I really can't understand what's riding them to veto your plans. From my own experience with corporate policy, however, I would suspect that they liked your idea so much that they want to steal it.

Anyway. I'm not a fan of the RQ system, but I would actually have been willing to look at it again, if mainly out of the greed to have leather-wrapped books on my shelves. ;)
On the other hand, Savage Worlds is said to be a very good fit for Conan as well, so that would have been a great call.

But most of all I would be intrigued by the atlas. And I can only presume they aren't letting you make it because they want to do something similar themselves.

Keep a stiff upper lip.

I never bought any of the Conan stuff before as I really dislike D20 stuff but I would definitely have bought a SW version and the Atlas' sound like they would have been awesome.

All I can say is that the whole announcement was a huge cocktease! I love the smell of printed paper, and I love the smell of leather. Two non-d20 rulebooks, and a sourcebook set by Vince - if that was a general announcement (without the letdown), I would have jizzed my pants!!!

I find it funny, how anyone still owns the rights to a character and setting that should be public domain by now. Last I checked, Howard gave himself a do-it-yourself-lobotomy 70+ years ago, with no next of kin, and all his stuff sold-off soon after! I can't fathom how anyone can clam any sort of ownership of his work?
