Thanks again to all the folks on this thread who've voted to get the project published, though it seems certain that Mongoose will not reconsider.
I have a modest proposal, however, that might make a lot of folks happy.
As anyone who follows US news might know, the city of Cross Plains, TX, has been devastated by wildfires. Though Robert E. Howard's home (where he wrote the Conan stories) was not touched, the rest of the town has been laid waste by fires, and many charities and concerned citizens are doing what they can through donations and other work to help Cross Plains get back on its feet.
I live in Texas, and have been a fan of REH's work for more than 25 years. If there is anything I can do to help, I will do so.
Here's what I'm proposing:
I am sitting on the first 80% of a completed epic adventure for the Conan RPG that I cannot for legal reasons publish. I don't own the intellectual property rights, and Mongoose won't publish it. I don't want to scrape the names off it and repurpose it to be for a different game, either.
I will prepare the adventures I have finished as ready-to-distribute .pdf files, with my own minimal desktop publishing resources. One every one-to-two weeks is a reasonable pace for the release schedule, giving me enough time to finish up the rest of the campaign, which has been on hold until I finish up some paying work. The adventures themselves are long enough that some could take several sessions to play through.
Then, Mongoose and/or I will distribute each chapter separately at a lowered cost (to reflect the lack of artwork and/or polish) through drivethrurpg.com, a .pdf distributor used by Mongoose regularly. The adventures will have maps and diagrams where necessary, but they won't look super-pretty. They will be fairly cheap - buying all nine chapters will be much less than the cost the ridiculousy high price they set the original box set at.
All earnings from the sales of the nine chapters of this epic adventure will go directly to one of the charities attempting to help the citizens of Cross Plains, Texas.
Cost to Mongoose= $0.
The only cost is to me, for all of the time and effort already spent writing this adventure set, and the effort doing desktop layout for .pdf publication.
This rewards you, the supporters of the game, does good for a worthy charitable cause, and frankly, everyone wins.
So, Matt and Ian... what do you think? You know how to contact me.
And frankly, even if Mongoose doesn't go for it, I encourage everyone on this forum to look up one of the worthwhile charities trying to help out Cross Plains and try to see if you can help out, even if a small amount. Considering how much joy his writing and worlds have given us, it's not much to ask.
