Base Coating

Just curious what paint everyone uses to base coat. Until recently, I used citadel Chaos Black Spray as my base paint. However, they have changed their formula to New Black, which is not working for me. I have used Armory black spray and like it for things like bugs where any texturing from spraying is OK. I have tried Tamiya black spray as well, but it doesn't cover the way I like(somewhere between Classic and New Citadel Black) and is much more expensive per unit. I paint with acrylics, so whatever I would use would have to work with acryllics. What base coating do others use?

Before I risk trying the new black myself - what exactly is the difference? (apart from the price I suppose... :/ )

As for Your question: depends on the squad, either no base at all or citadel skull white paint. Former gives squads with darker tones (although they do need repainting after a year or two), latter brighter squads.

I use Citadel's Chaos Black, tried Tamiya's but it didn't suit me. Chaos Black spray is IMO a decent paint, and after looking around on the net I found that many people share my opinion.

Though I think Poko might give you a curious alternative

The can I tried of the New Black was terrible. It wasn't covering, and ran like thinned wet brush paint. I talked to a guy at my FLGS and he said that the first cans from the new factory were not right (no details, but maybe I had a can from the bad lot). Citadel/GW had replaced their stock of the black. Another FLGS(I am lucky to have 2 :D) stated that the black behaved differently, needing a different spray distance than before and would sometimes even come out with a glossy finish that needed a matte spray if you wanted black. I'm looking for a paint that behaves decently and consistantly, and the New Black sounds like its one or the other. Sounds like other users are still liking Citadel black, maybe the formula is now revised?

personally, the GW black(again). up until a few months ago i used a cheap normal black spray, and it worked quite well.
but

as i bought it recently, it seems they'v cvhanged the contents or whatever.

i have a vauge suspicion that they may have mis-packed a military-grade black spray.
the thing stinks like a chemical factory, can't cover edges, and it takes two days to dry, but after that you have a nice bullet, acid and probably nuclear-proof layer of black paint. oh, and you can forget about stripping the paint
so yeah, i'd stick to the tried products

I use sandable auto primer, black or gray or rust - depending on the model, from any hardware store. Cheap and reliable.

Here are my personal favorites...after MUCH experimentation:

Foe Black primer I go with Krylon or Krylon Fusion Satin for plastics. For metals I go with an auto-body spray primer callled Duplicolor Sandible Primer.

For White primer I go again with Krylon or Krylon Fusion Satin (either grey or white for plastics and the Grey or White Duplicolor Sandible Primer for metals. I've been using more grey than white of late, as I'm beginning to think the white makes colors almost too vivid...but that's personal opinion.

I've had GREAT luck with all of these. The last time I used GW white was on Skinnie Raiders and the stuff came out so grainy I had to rub each mini down with cheese cloth just to tone the texture down.

Regards.

I airbrush on a 1:1 mix of Black artist Gesso and Rubbing Alcohol. It leaves a good tooth on the surface, goes on quick, and doesn't clump like spray paint.

Yeah but we're not all as cool as you Chris!

i read a very interesting article on using gesso as a primer for mini's here now that you mention it:

I'm pretty impressed to be honest seems really easy and doesnt need to be done out of doors! :D

Actually, I always spray prime my minis indoors. Of course only when nobody's home apart from me and the cat (my family tends to complain about 'the pesky odour'), and I never suffered from any harmful effects other than the smell. No passing out, no suffocation, not even a slightest headache. Of course the room needs some ventilation afterwards, but opening the window is about enough. The smell usually disperses completely in about 1-2h.

Don't know if I'm just a hardy bloke, I have low quality spray cans or the harmful ingredients of the paint accumulate in my body up to the point my skull will burst, but I just can't see why spraying should be conducted outdoors. Well, whatever.

Yeah, I did about a dozen with non-thinned and I kept getting major bare spots, so I thinned it down and haven't had a problem since. The only thing is that you need to let it set for a full 24hrs before touching it. Otherwise you might get some flaking.

But I won't use anything else now.

Well, to remember an old saying about old dogs and new tricks Chris, I'm going to try this, and I've even already primed my metal Exosuited troopers. I do want an extra good primer coat on these, for several reasons so I'm hopeful. Sometimes the teacher becomes the student. It's funny, but at the same time I had modded my troopers with magnets for weapon swaps I spotted Hyun (the link you mentioned at weetoysoldiers) posting at TMP about adding small magnets to his figures for various options, so I took some quick pics of the work I'd already done and tossed a post up on TMP just so folks later didn't think I was grave robbing his ideas. Heck, it's not like either of us was the first to think of it anyway, but a person can get defensive nonetheless, lol.
