Mongoose
Hello all,

According to the text, p. 71, 1e HG Capital Ship Design Example Step 8 80 TL 12 50-ton Torpedo Bays

80 Tech Level 12 50 ton torpedo bays are fitted with no special features. Size is now 31 tons each and cost is MCr 24 each. Total is 2,480 tons and MCr 1,920. 620 hardpoints remain.

I am totally confused on how the TL 12 50-ton torpedo bay tonnage is reduced by 1e HG Spacecraft Options Primitive & Advanced Spacecraft Armaments & Screens rules on p. 53 when the TL 14 100 ton Meson Gun bay tonnage was not altered. Would someone please explain what the difference is between the meson gun and torpedo bay is please.

I do understand that the TL 12 50-ton torpedo bay TL 9 cost is doubled per the Armaments & Screens rules on p. 53, which means that a TL 9 50-ton torpedo bay has a cost of MCr12.

Checking the information in 1e HG Spacecraft Options for New Weapons Mounts Torpedo Weapons/Torpedo Bays p. 48:

Torpedo Barbette: Torpedoes are heavy anti–ship missiles (and some navies often refer to them as heavy missiles). Each torpedo carries tremendous destructive force. They can be defended against using standard anti–missile countermeasures. A torpedo barbette fires one torpedo per round, using the normal rules. A torpedo barbette can fit no other weapon. A torpedo barbette costs MCr 4, taking up five tons of space and does not include any ammunition

Torpedo Bay: The 50 ton version fires three torpedoes at a time. Otherwise this weapon performs as a normal torpedo launcher. The 100 ton torpedo bay fires six torpedoes at a time.

I do not see a price of MCr12 for a TL 9 50-ton torpedo bay on the page. My guess is that since the torpedo barbette costs MCr4 and has one launcher the 50-ton torpedo bay with three launchers is MCr12 and the 100-ton torpedo bay with six launchers the price is MCr24.

Is the above the correct interpretation of the rules?

Because the meson bays didn't use tonnage reduction, instead they used other upgrade options (accurate and high yield).

10 Tech Level 14 100 ton meson gun bays with accurate and high yield characteristics.

The prices for torpedo bays are covered on the table at the bottom of page 50, the Heavy Missile Bays are the Torpedo Bays.

Apparently I have missed the text detailing that a fifty or one hundred ton bay is the size of weapon and that I carried over the details from CT HG 2 1980 that when empty the bays still require fifty and one hundred tons of space.

If the meson gun bay takes up thirty tons versus one hundred tons of space without fire control the correct designation is a 30-ton bay.

Can I have empty fifty and one hundred ton bays in 1e HG and 2e HG?

Thank you for the clarification, I hope that 23 HG identifies them as torpedo weapons since I mistook them for improvements to the turret missile rack and missile bank bay in 1e CRB/MRB.

Did the 1e CRB/MRB 50-ton missile bank bay get a 100-ton missile bank upgrade?

Another thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.

50 ton bays take up 50 tons, 100 ton bays take up 100 tons. If you are using more advanced bays built at a higher TL you can apply the tonnage reduction to these, but without that they take up 50/100 tons not including fire control. Empty or full they take up the same amount of space.

It does.

The large bays (100 tons) version for the 50 ton bays found in the Core Rulebook are covered in a chart on page 48.

Hello and thank you again AndrewW for the reply.

It does.

This is good to know information and really makes me want to get a copy of 2e HG. Of course the wait is making me go a bit more crazier than I normally am.;-)

I am blaming gremlins for hiding the page 48 entries for my error and thank you for providing the information.
