Who is considering writing under the OGL?

Ben2

Mongoose
I've been absent from these forums for a little while, due to work commitments, and there've been a lot of changes while I've been away.

World at War is out in May and Modern combat in July. With OGL it opens the possibility of writing supplements for these systems, and while no one has a printing press or the money for it, there is the possibility of doing pdfs at wargames online.

It also raises the possibility of formalising the various fan supplements on the interwebz.

Two problems with this - duplication and quality control. We'll see how these work out, it will depend entirely on how many people want to do supplements.

So who is thinking of writing something?

Ben

I'd have to see the rules.
BF:Evo had some flaws in it, maybe if I was writing mass battle rules. I have rules for gang skirmishes based in a near-future post-apocalytpic setting, it revolves mostly around warring states and oil, I could easily pass this off with such a ruleset.
I feel dirty using other peoples rules though, I have to start from scratch.

Thinking of doing something? Sure!

Is the something I'm thinking that's probably already been done/getting done better? Highly plausible!

Will I actually got off my useless duff and DO any of it, playtesting and all? Dubious!

There are a group of us that are working on various variants, I personally am working on a Star Wars one.

Yes i`m hoping to step up to the plate, as i love writing rules, at the moment i have some Evo stuff on my desk, i guess i`m waiting to find out about the new rules in case of changes, my first should be a Horror set, i need to show it to the mongoose team, as i have added new stuff, like Horror and Fear dice rolls, and people are not units or teams, just fighting on their own etc...

If i could get a stamp from mongoose, it means a lot of people can grab Horror figures and play..

I guess we have to wait until then..

As for other projects on my desk in some forms, i have some really new ideas around the evo system, which raise a smile of two from people..

I'm guessing that you already know that while you can do a non-commercial Star Wars version you couldn't sell it. I think a lot of the questions are centred around producing under the OGL commercially - although it wouldn't be the first time I was wrong.

(apologies if I'm teaching you to suck eggs here.)

Maybe. I have a few ideas for post apocalypse gang-ish warfare with mad-max style pimped out cars and maybe a cyberpunk style near future urban rumble type game.

Unfortunately, yes we already knew that one, but there are a few others in the works that will be able to sold. :)

We're on what's basically a rewriting of the entire SST Army Lists and though it will (can) never be sold (free pdf release) you could easily make a book out of it.

Quality control is IMO indeed an issue.
Basically the market will tell. If someone publishes a poorly written unbalanced supplement it will show and he is soon off the market...

Duplication is IMO a similar matter.
Lets say I write a WW II supplement on the Desert War and somebody else is also doing also one, the market will show whos better, or?
With todays online reviews, pdf previews etc, people are very fast in knowing who is doing good or bad work.

I am working on the official Pac War supplement at the moment, after that maybe Desert War as an OGL product.

Depends also on my "real" life workload...

I have actually thought of writing some fiction for Modern Combat. I have always wanted to write a book and did well in college althought not on any scale on a professional level. In fact, it would take tremendous work and editing on my part. Just an idea floating around, I would give it a slim chance. If nothing else, some fiction for S&P.

Good for you guys. I wish you every success!

Ahem - you are aware the Mongoose is exactly planning this for 3.Quarter 2008?

Prior to BFE being pulled to revamp under the new WaW scheme, I was working on some "super modern" units that were a "possible future" of the BFE "possible future". The idea was that continuous fighting caused several of the BFE factions to evolve their combat units and also the addition of a couple of factions.

I'll have to wait to see how the new rule system works as I was basing the rules on the SST rules(some units had similar abilities to some SST units ;)). Some of the cover mechanics that were being discussed in the SST:WotS(I'm assuming is now WaW) revision seemed to be trying to shove the square peg of realistic simulation into the circular hole of fun and playability.

It will be interesting to see if air rules are part of the OGL system. I hope not. I hated the air-phase/air-unit system. IMO, air support should have been an abstraction like artillery support.

Well... we over here at Exploding Goat Games have 1 Evo-supp well in the works with at least 2 more in their infancy... We hope to have the 1st one released as close as possible to the formal May/June OGL announcement from Matt...

its tentatively called D-Evolution... (so long as that does not violate the SRD) and is basically this...

Modern Science has gone and torn a hole in the space/time continuum and now DINOSAURS, PREHISTORIC MAMMALS, and CAVEMEN are rampaging across the land!

It's entering the playtest phase now and I must say... I'm getting a real kick out of seeing my British Army squared off against a massive (and a bit out-of-scale) T-Rex from Schleich toys... hehehehhhehehehehehehe

Oh, now it's already third...

What Mongoose plan and what they do are 2 completely different things.

Well, first that and second we add a whole new chapter of background, a list of new Traits, advanced Psyker rules, about 20 all-new bug species/variants and a couple of factions never taken care of by Mongoose (Independent humans, Mercenaries, Raiders etc.) and even some new (i.e. arachnid controlled mutated humans).
In addition our rules will support the fluff - no more companies out of 3-man Exosuit squads. Oh, and will have a space map.
And of course it will be compatible (made for) the new Evo Core Rules.
It will also contain a huge list of proxy models since MGP doesn't produce them any more (and probably will not before 2010, if ever again at all).

And, I am afraid, will be utterly illegal - SST is Sony's copyright, and material such as this cannot be reproduced under Open Content, even if it is free. Sorry!
