Where are all the pics of painted minis? SF

@Iain - Thanks mate.

@Mc Kinsty - Very seldom use washes as a technique, don't like its lack of control, but if I have no choice then then I always use ink not paint. Easier to control and I find the colour coverage pound for pound, better than thinned down paint.

For this ship I painted the saucer all over in the darkest shade of grey you see in the panel line recesses than gradually worked it up from there.

Same technique I use for the routine white scheme, I just start lighter and take it up to pure white.

For this one tho, after bringing her up to the lightest gray I wanted i then went back down a shade and painted the "Aztec" effect, as Iain calls it, well! (same for the engineering hull)

Sounds a long process but only spent 2 hours on the entire saucer.

@mdauben & Stealth7 - thanks guys, much appreciated.

My feds look kind of mediocre compared to those...the only thing I was pleased with were the bussard collectors -

Here's my first try at a Gorn. I selected a flat black hull because frankly, having several fleets in different shades of grey was getting BORING. Klingons, grey-blue, Romulans, light grey. Gorns are "supposed" to be a dark grey, and it looked okay, but I wanted to have more table-top appeal.

The engine "glow" was particularly tricky to figure out, but I think the effect works. The black hull is slightly darker than the pictures show; I was trying to enhance the engine glow and other details by over-exposing the picture a bit.

In the original Dark Grey that I decided was too boring. The mini is incomplete at this point; I was trying to see how the hull color contrasted with the engine detailing.

Any suggestions?

I love the engine colouring, the green makes it pop. Only thing i would do is take a lighter shade of the main hull colour and hit some of the raised areas on the wings to bring them out.

Beyond that its perfect.

I would suggest something like Humbrol 67 "tank grey" or something else intended to depict a WW2 German tank. After a black ink wash, the ship would probably look pretty close to black but with the recessed details shaded in.

The engines do look nice!

Cool - I do like the black and green :) what colour will you do the scales?

Of course they need gloss varnish and some tendrils on them for a proper shadow tech finish 8)

Version 2 of the Gorn after applying some suggestions people made. I applied a lighter shade of black to the raised portions of the mini, and did the shuttle launch rails and pads.

I have 2 minis in line to finish in the next few days, so hopefully I can include the lighter engine glow color.
Definitely a better way to improve the engine glow than to rely on photo trickery. :)

Removed old pics, new pic with better lighting. Dang, a cat hair got in the picture... it's not attached to the ship. :)
Find the Kzinti spy quickly. :D

I have to disagree about the Shadow tech - I always thought they were matt, or at most satin finish. Regardless of SFU/B5 crossover, gunmetal might look good on the scales - keep the ship mostly dark, then the engines should show up even better.

In any case, I'm impressed with the work so far - the details are nicely picked out with neat borders between different coloured areas.

Okay, pictures of my first Gorn squadron, to be used in a convention game in a few weeks:
Gorn HDD and 2 BDD

I made the base coat of 1:2 Emerald Green to Jade Green lighter with some white paint, and then used a wash of 1:3 Emerald Green and water to highlight the green. The tricky part was to allow the yellowish metallic particles to settle and then move aside most of the paint away, so that I could use the brush to pick up more particles. Otherwise, the Emerald Green made the whole thing too dark by the time I got it "shiny" enough.

Fantastic looking models....

Very nice, they have come together really well. Only think I would change would be to make the plasma launchers a different colour, maybe a red or dark purple?

Didn't think the black hull colour would look good (that's usually an Orion thing), but I stand corrected.

Experimental post Gorn CL

When I go to simply attach a file it tells me it is too big.

Speaking of Orions, I love the blue scheme that McKinstry used in his photos on Photobucket showcasing his Gorn scheme (scroll five images to the left). Actually the black and white Light Raider is cool as well.

I do like those nacelles - really stand out :)

What did you place on the base? Is that something to weigh the bases down?

I placed pieces of rubber hosing on the bases to hold up the special action tokens so that we could still read the firing arcs on the base stickers.

Wow! Love it. The Panelling effect on the Saucer section is awesome. Any special technique you used or just a fine brush and steady hand?

Love the Gorns, Billco! The way you did the nacelles adds a lot of visual interest to the otherwise dull color scheme. I also like the grey "scales", I think they work better than the green ones on the Mongoose pics. :)

Thanks. I wanted something different than the standard grey Gorn hull colors, and something that reflected the Gorn trait of being tightwads; they wouldn't spend funds on fancy paintjobs for their ships. :) I dreaded the idea of another grey looking fleet, after the Klingons and Roms...

I have seen other miniature spaceships that are done to a higher standard than my work, and they look fantastic, but they're too brightly colored for my taste. But to each their own. :) I wish I could paint that well.
