Whatever happened to Grey Star?

I personally like to think that Grey Star grew so powerful after having time to meditate and increase his powers, AND use the moonstone to teach him higher secrets of shianti lore, that he eventually entered the dazirian plane in order to challenge naar.

Sorry, but that's impossible. Naar has the Moonstone at least since MS 5076. Grey Star disappeared three months before the "Voyage of the Moonstone", which takes place in MS 5083.
By the way, Naar is in the Plane of Darkness, not in the Daziarn.

The Moonstone was brought by the Shianti to the Plane of Light after GS's quest. It's mentioned in one the Newsletter #7.

I really hope people aren't ACTUALLY paying those obscene prices. The only way to get the vendors to reduce their ridiculous prices is not pay 'em, I reckon..

Otherwise, all we're doing is encouragin' 'em...

The prices on eBay are only dictated by the supply and demand. Those are the actual prices some people are willing to pay to get their hands on those rare books.

That's what I mean. I'd like to see people stop paying them myself just to see sanity restored to the price list. $200-300 for a paperback less than 10 years old should be considered criminal. :shock:

I thought the prices were so obscene that when I sold my own copies some months back, I consciously made a decision to limit the top price I would look for to just twice book list price (I had several at one point, that I'd picked up a year or two ago, before they suddenly went through the roof. ) I had paid about that for them, and figured that kind of mark up made sense to me when I bought them...

Personally, I'd be happy to see them reprinted, and otherwise might pick them up on the off chance I see them at a local used book store for a reasonable price, but otherwise, I can live quite comfortably without them.

I got my Lone Wolf series books 1-20, my Magnamund Companion, and my Grey Star Books. That's all I really need..

Perhaps he lost, and lost the moonstone in the process, and in the later books perhaps a lone wolf (or a grandmaster apprentice, YOU the PLAYER) would have to enter the dazirian plance and rescue grey star. Similar to the way Lone wolf rescued banedon.

Yeah I know it sounds silly, but I like Grey Star. The fact that he was a human makes me think that he could even have surpassed the shianti in their power one day; and he did have the moonstone to unlock all of their teachings and knowledge.

Oh and before anyone says anything, margeret weis's raistlin character came out after the grey star books! :shock:

Really? I thought that character was created in roleplaying the modules way before the novels came out (in fact, his trademark whisper being a roleplaying element from thos games rather than a built in trait fro mthe start)...and they came out in the mid 80's right?

That and I'd rather Grey Star not become more powerful than beings born and bred for magic. It's not really necessary, he did plenty fine in stopping Shasarak and Agarash with his own powers backed by the Moonstone. It kinda takes away from the specialness of the Elder races if even exceptional humans with amazing experiences can surpass them.

I think you're wrong. Dragons of Autumn Twilight was published in 1984. And was derived from playtesting the modules obviously earlier than that. Grey Star the Wizard was published in 1985. I'm just not sure where you got some type of ripoff thing. I mean if anything it's got the standard wizard class, Tolkien feel, with evil overtones. I have never heard that Raistlin was ripped off from Grey Star, and the dates seem to justify that. And they are radically different characters.

Yah, I think this is the key point. Even if they had some common origins, they grew into vastly different characters, and both of them interesting.

Matter of fact, Krynn and Magnamund are my two favourite settings, probably 'cos they're the ones I grew up with, and I like that they're both very different.

He played the character so vividly, weis was immediately thrilled, and begged the guy to give her the rights to the character, and immediately told hickman and the publishers that the raistlin character was 'hers', and only she could write about him.

Anyone here who knows of this, which plenty of people do since Weis and hickman tout this story quite a bt, can verify. Its also on hickman's own website the adress to which you can find on google.

I'm sorry. It seemed from your first post that you were saying, before anyone says anything...Grey Star was first. It made it seem like you were suggesting Raistlin was based on Grey Star or something.

Oh, I know that story. They don't make any secret of the fact that it was another person that came up with the distinctive personality traits of Raistlin. It's in their annotations. Since she decided to describe the character from there on in her novels I'm not sure what the problem is. She's never claimed, as far as I know, sole creatorship of the character so I don't see why it's being raised as an issue?

And what intent are you speaking of? To challenge the Dark Queen? I'm completely lost here. How does this relate to Grey Star? As in how does this intent make Grey Star "first"??

Ah well, I love both settings as they pretty much midwived me through fantsy realms in my earlier years. I'm actually interested as to where you were going with this...it's nice to know someone else out there is as equally devoted...
