Turning Example

I'm glad you popped back in. Yes, it took all of the input given here to end up where we got to. Plus, anyone who likes the more "complicated" versions can still use them, right? :D

Thanks again to all for the suggestions. :D :D

Your welcome Bu

But for those tight spaces where a full turn key wont fit, I might just cut a load of the new ones up, to make individual turn keys about 1" sq for each of the 3 turns with a 90° corner opposite the actual turn, with your yellow lines and a turn number on.

An acetate version might also be useful. (will slide under ships in its way)

For that matter, a see-through version of even the original Mongoose key would work alright. :)

Possibly, but I would rather it not have to go under the ship I am turning,

Unless you mean place it over the ship ???

That's what the advantage of having a clear version would be. You could hold it over the model, but that would be harder on the center of a table. If playing on the floor it would work alright.

Yes to make it an "even" measure all over the table you need to look at it from the same angle all the time (ideally from directly above)

I've got it!

Mirrors!

O'Neill, as played by Richard Dean Anderson in Stargate SG-1 has a go to explanation for how any technology he dioesn't understand works, "Magnets!"

Your cry of "Mirrors" echoed something similar to me so I thought I'd add it.

OK, obviously I have not watched quite enough of SG to remember that. His comment is much like that of Arthur C. Clarke-

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Of course, this quote was remembered by JMS and was the inspiration for his Technomages.

In a Periscope ?????

Well, I have indeed made those before. I have several for use as LoS where you need to look at where the unit is with table topography in play.

But it is much simpler to use one of the turning key designs here for a situation where you would need to turn but the player is not able to look straight down.

I know Bu, the "periscope" thing was just a jest on the mirrors post, bearing in mind we are talking WW2 naval with subs around

I saw a possible jest there, but didn't know for sure. Text can be so limiting, you know? Your comment though will now make me always consider a submarine periscope to be a "play-aid" when I see them in submarine movies.

No worries I thought the ??????? & hinted at the jest

however you could say a periscope is a gaming aid, some of the sub and destroyer commanders played a fine game of cat and mouse
