Turning Example

Bostich

Mongoose
Does anyone have better examples of turning than the VaS rulebook?

I've been trying to use the turning key but i's very ... "fuzzy" ... there's no proper anchor point and the example uses the stern of the ship but what about mounted ships or counters?

The extra whatever it is to the left of the pie piece throws everything off it seems. I should be pivoting the chip from the centre of the compass but I have to slide it under the ship to do so. It seems very inexact.

Any suggestions? Also.. what if I didn't buy the counters? I wouldn't even have a turning key.

I'm used to bow-based turning so this is a bit odd to begin with.

I trimmed the turning key into just the arc part.
I Stick the nose of the ship on the dead ahead point and then slide it around the amount of points required.
I couldn't figure out how to use the full, square key...
In the other naval games I have 'Kiss me Hardy' and 'Age of sail' they key are this arc type shape.

I made a "turn key" alomh the lines of the old "Car Wars" turn key. IIRC I posted it here ages ago but can't find it now. If anyone downloaded a copy and wants to put it up as an example of an alternative then please feel free. In the meantime I'll keep looking for the one I did.

This should be it. It could be used as an optional tool.

How do you use this? Is "4" for the 4th turn made by a ship in one turn? And why the greater angle on that one?

Rather than being something sequential, they are simply the turn rating you are at currently. To my knowledge, the turn 4 pivot isn't used in the game yet and the turn 3 with only a small number of subs and the occasional torpedo boat. Basically, you place the stern of the model or counter at the maximum turn number of your ship or the turn number position of what you want to do (if that is smaller). Place the ship parallel to the straight line behind it, then pivot off of the number position. This brings the ship parallel to the new course.

Thanks! Aye Aye!

I've played with making up a modification of DM's key that includes a movevent "ruler". I'd like a volunteer to let me know if the JPG prints out in the proper scale for the ruler to function without greivious errors (it works fine on my printer).

I gave it a go. Across the full 7 inches, it's 1/16 of an inch short. Not too bad. I think that I'll use a wide tip pen to trace around the pattern on plastic. That should fix it for me.

Considering the generalizations that were necessary for the game's simplicity, 1/16" could be chalked up to the to and fro wave actions of the sea, heh.

I'll be laminating some and attaching them to cardstock. I've got an idea that I might be submitting to S&P as a short article, as well.

does it not need to be longer than 7 inches

French Le Fantasque class destroyer base speed 9 inches + you then add Flank speed bonus

Sure, it could be made larger. I compromised at 7" as that works for the large majority of ships in the game. For those few ships that need a longer rule, you can either use a ruler (and paint "Le Fantasque ruler"on it, heh) or use the template twice by sliding it back a bit after moving part of the movement. Adding the ruler was just my idea of enhancing what DM came up with as a play-aid after I tweaked the angles a bit for my own version.

As part of the compromise, I wanted to keep the size of the key small enough to use flat on the table, if possible. If it was the rough size of a sheet of letter or A4 size, you'd need to hold it in the air as it would interfere with other ships on the table. I've got another idea for a play-aid but I still need to gather the supplies for it.

Curved on the ruler side may get round that, Might be worth a try

If you are saying that you could use it edgewise, that might be possible. I don't think that it would give much, probably less than an inch. Creative idea, though. Of course, you'd have it looking more like a plastic protractor, which would look more like the original Mongoose aid (though their's was just for turning). One of my quick versions was to adapt a protractor and stripe it with red car pinstriping tape that I have used for other hobby projects.
