The Gray Council Sharlin

Sammich!

Mongoose
The Gray Council float around the universe in their nice Sharlin, discussing and judging, being cryptic and wearing those gray robe things.

I think the Gray Council ship is more powerful than a normal Sharlin. Not only does it have a green glow out front, but it'd be a no brainer to put more hull/weapons onto a ship that carries the leaders of an entire race.

It'd probably be either War level (as another variant) or Armageddon level. War, if it's deprived of its' fighters (The Nials, maybe not the flyers), some/all of the troops, and some of the crew for extra hull and some more guns. Armageddon, if they bypass the losses and just add the hull and weapons.

What do you guys think?

The Grey Council is really mostly internal matters, isn't it?

And, let's not forget how often leaders are killed in Babylon 5. Cartagia, Clark (By Suicide, but still.), the Kahri (Sp?), etc.

If I were a leader, I'd want a little extra defense on my vehicle. >_>

Every flagship should be tough. Before the Neroon, I always thought that the Grey Council ship would be the toughest thing in the Minbari fleet. (Of course it got its ass handed to it by the EA once upon a time).

hallo,

If I were a leader, I'd want a little extra defense on my vehicle

Defense yes Attack no, the Gray Council Sharlin should not be a front line ship.

Look at Airforce one, good in defending its cargo but it wil never do the frontline work of a F16/F22/B2/117.

Are you the one, the one who was, the one who is or the one who will be?

Good point. But maybe just one more forward gun, you know, the best defense is a good offense, and all that. :)

Sorry for of topic.

@Shadow Queen

Are you the one, the one who was, the one who is or the one who will be?

I am the One and the many, the firts and the last we bring order to chaos "Resistance is futile""You will be assimilated".

The Sharlin is already the pinnacle of Minbari military technology. There is no more defence, until more advanced classes are developed. If they could build one super-Sharlin why not build every Sharlin to that standard?

Various possibilities (or plot devices) why not too many

In the Dilgar war Epic - they have built several to fight the Shadows but they are costly to maintain and sean as unesscary when nothing can stand before the basic Sharlin - over the thousand years the Shadow threat is lost and the super ships designed to fight them are mothballed with one reatined as a flagship

Or

They may keep them at home to defend against threats...........

They are building them but only that one is ready

etc :)

That really doesn't work. We know there were no Sharlins in the last Great War, and if the Minbari could build ships better than the Sharlin that are the same size and presumably have the same crewing requirements why would they settle for an inferior vessel?

There's a command Omega, right? What's the point there?

And the Council Sharlin would have a better command score, seeing as how the leaders are on it.

The Sharlin is already the pinnacle of Minbari military technology. There is no more defence, until more advanced classes are developed. If they could build one super-Sharlin why not build every Sharlin to that standard?

Why not? Well theoretically:

Assumption 1: Sharlin "current" spec = kill everything else that Minbari know about.

Assumption 2: If Sharlin "better" spec is possible but more expensive than "current" spec then there is no benefit in replacing one warship that cannot be matched by your opponent with another warship that will provide exactly the same military advantage (i.e. complete domination), especially if they can get *more* of the "current" spec for the money...

The conclusion is that "better spec" version is not needed and therefore not worth the expense for the fleet...however that's not to say that technology demonstrators could not be put on one or two vessels in the fleet...

Military technology is NOT always built to the very latest technological fidelity. The fidelity of the technology is targeted to the requirement which is dictated by the threat environment. Technology must be considered hand in hand with the benefit afforded compared to the cost incurred. Some technologies will act as force multiplies (e.g. Stealth increases survivability of the platform and hence LESS ships are needed per engagement to achieve the same military effect.)

EDIT: I however agree that it is pointless to put your biggest guns on a diplomatic ship that is not going to fight! If anything you would want to increase the survivability of the ship by increasing defensive systems (probably trying to increase it's stealth which could mean REMOVING weapons and other offensive systems that may have a significant impact on the ship's energy signature.)

The best defence is NOT a good offence. It's not being shot at by the enemy AT ALL. Preferably by being nowhere near them!

Assumption 3: The spacial requirements of a diplomatic ship are very different to a war vessel.

Ie. extra quarters, a hall with five up-lights, a VIP bar and storage for an eons worth of Ferrero Rocher.

It seem to me that the Grey Council Flagship is just a Command and Control variant of the Sharlin war cruiser kinda like the Tara'Lin class Command War Cruiser that the ISA have.

Well, yeah. But in the chance that you are shot at the enemy, you'd want a decent weapon. I mean, would you prefer to be wearing camo, or camo with a gun?

Upped stealth and upped armor, maybe more speed less troops, an Improved Neuron Laser, no Nials.

Council Sharlin (Sharlin Variant) -------- War

Speed: 8 or 9
Damage: 60/20
Crew: 66/22
Hull: 6
Troops: 0 or 1
Craft: 1 Flyer Flight
Special Rules: Advanced Anti-Fighter 5, Advanced Jump Engine, Flight Computer, Lumbering, Stealth 6+

-Weapon; Range; Arc; AD; Special-

Improved Neutron Laser; 36; F; 6; Beam, Precise, Triple Damage
Neutron Laser; 30; A; 6; Beam, Double Damage, Precise
Fusion Cannon; 18; F; 8; Mini-Beam
Fusion Cannon; 18; A; 8; Mini-Beam
Fusion Cannon; 18; P; 8; Mini-Beam
Fusion Cannon; 18; S; 8; Mini-Beam

Have you ever tried fighting a battle by democratic vote?

"So who wants to shoot that Hyperion? 3 votes for, 4 against and 2 abstentions. What about this Omega. 4 for, for against, and bobs gone to the loo. Now, should the defense grid be turned on or....." BOOM

The simple way to upgrade the Sharlin is to use the campaign refits. I'd guess about 6-8 would put the ship well on the way to Armageddon level.

So what's the weaponry in air force one USA has these days? By this logic it would make your average fighter pale in comparison! F-16 is joke! Bring on the air force one with it's superior weaponry!
