Spoiler Alert: Library Data

Cosmic Mongoose
So I try to keep a watchful eye out for spoilers on upcoming Traveller books from Mongoose. I ran across one today: Library Data. There is no information about it except the name. No indication if this is 3I or not. But I thought I would share this with everyone.

Well, I thought the author had already spilled the beans publicly but I could be mistaken. So I'll just say I think it'll be great for MGT.

I expect from the title and past MGT reproductions(?) it may be something us CT grognards have already with the same title, but expect there may be additional info as well.

That was my point. MOST MGT players & GMs have other versions. If this was mainly a reprint, repackage I wouldn't buy it.

I'll see if there is a review before purchasing.

Might be useful if it drew in ALL the library data from the adventures and supplements too. Having it in one place would be handy.

As well as addressing certain interesting discrepancies in the OTU, such as Arbellatra Alkoholikoi becoming, what was it, Duke of Regina at 15, Admiral of the Fleet at 15, Empress at 16 or something like that?

It would be nice having a tome of ALL library data in one book. Too many spread throughout too many editions and supplements. I end up using online resources to look up something instead of my books most of the time. If done right, this could be very useful.

Don't forget all the new players who do not have all the Traveller items that many of the long time players have.

It would be nice to have a complete library book.

It would also be nice if it was a searchable PDF file also for that price.

Seconded. Fragments of information scattered hither & yon across different books (even different decades!) only slow things down...

Third. MGT shouldn't avoid offering useful compilations of information some folks might already have. This is the Mongoose line for Traveller, not an expansion on whats already been done for people that have been playing the game for 30 years.

I bought the FFE CT CD because I wanted more information NOW. I have no problem with Mongoose rehashing the same information for their line. Hopefully, they'll add some stuff and clean it up, but it is their Traveller line and should be complete unto itself.

Also, it could be a damn good resource for those people who don't have this stuff - even if it's a reprint, a lot of this stuff, as noted, dates back decades and is out of print. Some players won't be able to blithely go back to their old CT or MT sourcebooks...

My only thing would be that they put forth a higher pre-production and review effort than some of their previous releases. It's quite disheartening to pay premium prices for things that have glaring errors. Erratta is something we all have to live with, but when you have to reprint the book, that's taking things to an entire new level.

I think for something like Library Data, which gets added to all the time, they should design it so that it can be easily added to as time goes on. I know you can't do that with a book (unless you release it in a 3-ring binder format), but one could always hope...

I only wish all the best for the poor author. He'll have the ire of every grognard in Charted Space pouring down upon him if he gets one date wrong ... :)

Eh, small errors happen. But that's what proofing is for.

What gets me is those large, glaring errors. Yanno, when like you do deckplans for ships that have the wrong dimensions in the illustrations (when they haven't changed in like 20yrs...), or when you publish a book and put the index for another book in place of the correct one... It's the larger errors that should never make it out of a professional shop that get me.

It's also costly to Mongoose. They were fantabulous for offering to not only replace the bad copies, but then to offer up a free book in return. Big kudo's to them. But I would much prefer they spend their money on creating quality materials than fixing HUGE mistakes like that. Plus the hits they take on their reputation that have larger implications than just $$.

I can deal with grognards. Some of them can be quite tasty if marinated in teriyaki overnight and grilled over an open flame. Others are just too old and stringy. They do make good scarecrows, though, were I ever of a mind to frighten off newcomers to the game. Since that's not in my evil plan, I guess I could use them to make jerky.

As long as the effort is made, and the finished product is self-consistant and thorough, I don't really mind if it contradicts some ridiculously obscure third-party publication.

I always liked the response after Sean Bean* was cast as Sharpe.

"Sharpe was never a blonde yorkshireman!" protests the fans.
"He was now."

* Seen Been or Shawn Bawn. He can't have it both ways.

Mongoose get their books so consistently and blatently wrong that it is about time they started releasing early drafts to the community for checking/comment BEFORE they get published.

The more I think about it. If this product combined past stuff with newer stuff I would seriously consider buying it. I too am tired of looking through 30+ years of books.
