Raiders Fleet List Ideas, please.

Hey, all. I'm thinking about delving into the world of the Raiders and would like to gather a 5 point raid list together (including at least one Nova, I think). I'd like to hear everyone's thoughts on composition and tactics, along with good choices for League ships to field with them. I already have a Gaim fleet, so I'm looking for choices outside of that fleet list.

Thanks, all, for your help!

The Vaarl is an interesting thought. Is it mainly just for the Scout abilities and the fact that it's got a nice weapon itself?

Yeah, it is a damn good scout.

But, if I were to drop one, what would I replace it with. There doesn't seem to be anything else as good w/in the Raider's fleet. That leaves something else at that PL in the Vree fleet (don't have my fleet book handy, sorry).

Sorry guys, thick moment.

How do you get the Nova in there? I thought it was just League ships.

I'm off to read the raider listing now.....

EDIT: Oh, it's actually listed as an option. I really should have read the book.

It's actually a different ship. The Raider Nova is a salvaged dreadnought hull fitted with shedloads of extra guns.

It's one of the weaker Battleships - unsurprising for a Raid ship with delusions of grandeur - but it does pack an impressive load of firepower.
More raw bulk than an omega, but weaker armour and less flak. The laser is worse but the plasma cannons have bite.

It's a good flagship, with a heavy broadside to support the forward-guns-only battlewagon.

The Strike Carriers are quite tasty now they have fleet carrier, helping deltas stand up to proper enemy fighter cover, and between those 4 ships you have an impressive 17 flights - more importantly between the initial CAP and turn 1 launch you can get 13 of them in the air even without Scramble! Scramble! orders.

With two big lasers Vaarls are always nice, alternatively something to add some direct punch might be good; you can always bring along another strike carrier and some Double-V bombers. Aternatively, some lighter ships as initaitative sinks - Darkhawk missile cruisers, pak'ma'ra Sunhawks or Xixx torpedo saucers can stay at range and still hit stuff rather hard.

Go with Double-Vs and V2s, but make sure you have a good supply of breaching pods as well.

Also, I REALLY like adding in a Claweagle from the Drazi. It is a good fluffy ship for the raiders, and helps give them a fast target for enemies to shoot at so your Raider Nova can get into position.

But, as a Raider player myself, I really enjoy grabbing the pak'ma'ra ships too. They are hard as nails and pack a punch.

Cheers,
Bry

Take two Drazi Sleekbiirds. Warbird hull at Patrol level with Breaching Pod and 12 dice particle repeater is one of the best Patrol boats around.

Hey, one additional question:

Do Raider fleets work like ISA and Psi-Corps fleets in that the alt. Fleet List ships they have access to still follow that ships Fleet rules, or do the Raiders just have access to the fleet's ship, but not the fleet's special rules?

-Ken

They have access to the special rules: the League ships are considered to be hired as mercs, they are not stolen ships crewed by raiders.

Excellent, thanks! I was wondering just how the hell they managed to crew Gaim ships, anyway.

Given that you really want a Nova, I'd take:

1 x Nova
2 x Strike Carrier
2 x Modified Freighter
1 x Delta Double-V wing
1 x Delta-V2 wing

For the final FAP I'd take either a Battlewagon or another Fighter Carrier and an extra wing each of Delta Double-V and Delta-V2.

A pair of modified freighters.....an interesting concept....

They're a bit better than they were - packing 8 armour piercing attack dice to the front rather than spitwads in every direction.

A good complement to help get those lasers lined up right.

Still depressing when you compare it to the myrmidon, though, isn't it?

I'd suggest probably the battlewagon if taking triggy's list - with 4 ships armed with standard guns you can afford another boresight laser and the battlewagon's is as good as the nova's for half the cost....it's the single biggest gun availible to the raider fleet, and it's mounted on the only armour six hull to boot.

Again assuming the need for a Raider Nova

(2 Raid) - Raider Nova
(1 Raid) - Battlewagon
(1 Raid) - Strike Carrier, Modified Freighter, Delta-V2 upgrade
(1 Raid) - Xeel, 2x Ximm

It's a tad fighter heavy, but with the Vree heavy fighters to give you punch and the escorts to support them you should be dogfight proof. I included the modified freighter largely as an initiative sink, but its not horrid anymore and it does add to the fighter wall. I think you need the two big beams to keep the enemy worried, and those saucers pack some serious damage capability.

Personally I would pass on the Nova I think at Raid and go with something like...

(1 Raid) - Battlewagon
(1 Raid) - Battlewagon
(1 Raid) - Strike Carrier, Modified Freighter, Delta V2 upgrade
(1 Raid) - Strike Carrier, Modified Freighter, Delta V2 upgrade
(1 Raid) - 2x Xeel

You end up with 16 superiority fighters that have good move and dogfight ability and eight anti-ship fighters from the Vree. You still have two scary lasers, and enough sinks to line them up with and 12 DD, SAP dice from the Vree. Though a Shrunka from the Gaim is also tempting.

Ripple

My ideal Raider fleet (that I'll get at some point in the future) wouldn't be too dissimilar to Ripple's, instead of only 24 fighters though, I'd pack in 46! I like the idea of Xeels though, I'd just buy Delta-V2 wings though rather than upgrade wings.

2 x Battlewagon
2 x Strike Carrier
2 x Modified Freighter
3 x Delta-V2 wing
3 x Delta Double-V wing
