Nike Class Battlecruiser

I just looked at the original rendered engines, I'm not a fan of the "vertical column" look...it sets it apart from the rest of the EA fleet because nothing else has it.

basic EA engine types -
round with flappers (hermes, olympus)
old engine bells (hyperion, artemis)
destroyer cluster (Nova, Omega and derivatives)
Big Block (Warlock and follow on destroyers)
flat groups (Chronos, Delphi, Apollo)

the original CGI looks to be a "big block" type but flatter, and so suggests an array of smaller nozzles as found on the warlock type. Putting the "vertical column" types there disrupts the expectation.

To me, it seems flatter than tall, and so I'm picturing something like a chronos engine array (3 nozzles in a row) but destroyer-sized (ie bigger). make them large enough so you can sculpt a bell shaped interior to the nozzle with some putty.

You defnitly have a knack for making models, no chance your'e gone make a "mal"(dunno the english word) of it to cast others?????
:D

The word your looking for is 'mould' I believe :P Unless your thinking of something else involved in casting (its been a long time since GCSE CDT :P

Just got back from GenCon - whew!

I was looking forward to using the 'chicken-wire' template. Any concerns over its use make me hesitant...I'll run some tests on something before I commit to it.

For the engines, I found a dealer at GenCon who had a huge bitz section (he's there every year and has a wealth of stuff for pennies). I found some things which may be suitable...I'll post pics when I'm rested & not a zombie. I wanted something which looks uniform and sculpting something seemed like a lofty goal...

As for moulds & sculpts, etc....well I've been talking to someone about the process. It seems there's an initial startup costs involved for the mould itself, rubber(?), etc. I would have to make about $150 in order to recover my initial startup costs. I suppose if I were to sell, say 10 of them at $15 a piece it becomes viable.

My biggest concern on the above is all the turrets I plan on adding. According to my source, the additional detail of the turrets might be too much for a single cast (or something like that) so anyone who ordered one would have to order 'after-market' Mongoose additions. Good thing is you could customize it as needed!

Of course this is all purely conjecture but hypothetically speaking if the demand were there...I also think we'd have to conduct this type of hypothetical transaction offline...

Lastly, I do plan on adding the vertical fins (2 sets - 1 tall, 1 short). I was holding off though because if I were to paint the model, I'd have to paint it then add the fins (at least with the diamond mesh pattern)...there's also the casting issue - my contact from above is periodically checking in on this thread and will advise me as I proceed.

Is the design originally yours and if not, then do you have permision of the person who designed the ship to sell models of that design?

That's a good question and one I have to run past my mould-making source. I know he's made other moulds/kits for things like Battlestar Galactica...maybe if the production run is small enough it wouldn't matter? I'll have to look into it. Since this is someone else's original design I'll contact them if we decide to produce this thing. I hope the creator feels I did it justice!

One, I'm interested, a custom model like this is definitely one for the collection.

Two, even if there are rights issues, the small amount of these that your likely to produce will make the matter mote, as the loss to the original rights holder will be minisule compared to the costs of taking legal action.

Looking forward to seeing the next installment.

unfortunately if the rights holder doesn't persue legal action, it weekens his ability to do so in the future, so even an insignifigant production run, if done without permission may risk legal action.

anyway, the model is definately cool, but for a veriety of quality and cost reasons you will probably have to use several molds and create the production models in pieces. Though i do have to say that the "custumizable turrets" idea is fairly interesting.

at $15 dollars count me in for sure if you were to go ahead and do this (though as Im on the other side of the planet if you want to avoid online dealing Id be happy to mail a cheque or postal order (and of course pay postage) Simply put from what Ive seen so far its a WAAAAY nicer design than the Mongoose Nemesis and about half the prices (incidentally you might want to be careful about doing too much like this on the forums or mongoose might get annoyed at you killing their Nemesis sales ;)

It's too bad Mongoose does not look at it's own boards for mini ideas. Your sculpt Chris definatly blows the upcoming mini's away. Mongoose, you reading this?
Anyway, just ask the original designer for its use. Usually no one cares. What's next on the sculpting line?
George

I beleve this a legal representation of a model. It's not the same as the drawing, but close. You this is like other product, they look close to the other, but they are not the same and that make it legal. This more like it the Coca cola and Pepsi, They look the same allmost teast the same but they are not the same. Coke is better. :P

NO! Their can only be one! Coke. Now back to the main topic at hand. Anyone else try scratch building a ship?
