EDITED: updated with corrected and improved design. 3/1/26
This was inspired by Alex Phillips on Facebook posting about him asking kids what should be on an ambassador's shuttle. Obviously, I couldn't fit it all on a shuttle, so I converted a 2000 ton County class Ambassadorial Vessel, a floating embassy, into Phillips Wonderland. I was also inspired by a comment on the Traveller RPG discord asking about if attractions on worlds were ever discussed which lead me to think about the wonderful special needs amusement park here in San Antonio called Morgan's Wonderland. So I have built my own high-tech version of Morgan's Wonderland in a spaceship.
Ambassador Alex Phillips of the Solomani Confederation found himself with a retired County Class Ambassadorial Diplomatic Transport after he retired from active service. Unsure of what to do with the large vessel, he asked his children for input and got many suggestions appropriate for children of their ages such as a waterslide and rooms for puppies. Inspired by their enthusiasm and a charitable organization that had reached out to him before his retirement, he decided to convert the transport into a luxury resort for disabled and special needs children across Solomani space.
Through a special lottery run by Morgan’s Wonderland Camps and the Make-a-Wish Foundation and via many charitable donations, Phillips Wonderland travels from system to system giving special needs children, called campers when aboard, and their families a special three to four days trip of pampering and adventure in a safe environment aboard the converted vessel.
At 2000 tons, the ex-diplomatic transport was an embassy in space in its previous life. Now, the main conference and administrative sections have been ripped out and replaced by specially designed equipment and water features to allow those children with disabilities and other special needs to enjoy time outside of the confines of wheelchairs and life support beds. This ship can support up to 20 special needs children and their families with complete medical support and an aide for each child as well as a trained steward for each family.
The ship has installed advanced environmental facilities throughout the campers’ areas of the ship. This includes advanced filtering to ensure no camper is exposed to allergens or environmental conditions that may affect their health or enjoyment. They can also set up partitions for individual areas or rooms to vary the environment in many ways, in support of non-human campers or to allow campers to experience different environments that may be interesting or even beneficial to them.
Current amenities include; a 70 dTon free play water feature and pool area that includes walk through fountains, a wading and swimming pool, watersides, water fight arena with water cannons and defensive walls, an active pool with wave functions and a separate hot tub for relaxation. 2 of the grav tube slides are specifically terminated into the waterslide pool for an extended thrill ride waterslide experience. There is a kinetic sand beach next to the pool area where children can dig and play as well as build sand castles, with or without molded buckets for shaping the walls and turrets.
Adjacent to the pool play area is a 40 dTon aquarium facilities that includes an observation deck, a ray petting pool and swim with the fishes activity area where the campers are able to get in with the fishes and experience them first hand. The aquarium area is fully capable of supporting dolphin campers, though those are exceedingly rare.
One of the crowning features of the vessel is the gravitic tube slides. The 4 slides, 2 “wet” and 2 dry, raise above the level of the hull into the transparent dome arching over the whole of the activity area. The dome can turn from transparent to opaque, in whole or in part, and has a built in holo projector if there is any need to project images over the sky-dome surface. The slides themselves are technical marvels, with transparent tubes that allow the rider to have a commanding view of the ship below and the stars above. The gravitic generators are very fine and allow the ride to be tailored to the child’s desires for speed, turbulence, and even orientation or spin. They are large enough to allow the child to be accompanied by a full-sized adult assistant if needed. They twist around each other and circle around much of the play area below.
A 10-person active gaming arcade provides a variety of group play games and carnival like games geared towards less-abled individuals. There is also a climbing wall, obstacle course and a “climbing” ancient Terran pirate ship for children to plan amongst. There is also a riding “carousel” with various specially designed, configurable, animatronic riding creatures with a holographic display room that allows up to 5 children, each with a parent or sibling, to experience riding on an exotic creature though fascinating landscapes.
There is an interactive holo-theater capable of holding 20 life-support chairs and an additional 40 people, with very fine gravitic controls and sensory enhancements that hold showings of popular movies and events as well as mimicking popular attractions, activities and locations in an accessible and engaging manner. In addition to the theater, there is a small village setup to allow interaction in normal and familiar environments for things the campers may enjoy doing. They also include a sound studio, for making their own music as well as listing to exiting music and soothing sounds. The village is built to interact on all sensory levels, from touch and sound to taste and smell.
The final amenity is the 20 dTon petting zoo and animal rooms. The ship maintains about 60 mostly tiny and small but a few up to medium sized animals of various types from around the Confederation. 2 salons are set aside, the Puppy and Kitty rooms, for children to have swarms of small cuddly animals interact with them in a safe, controlled environment. The larger animals are visited in the corrals set up around the stable area and campers are free to interact with and pet the animals with professional supervision.
A 20 dTon nature and butterfly park that is built for wheelchair accessibility is a popular calming activity after an active day of play. There are also two zero-g relaxation room for anyone wishing some quiet time with a large panoramic view of space or other calm displays.
For the adults and siblings, there is a bar and lounge for decompression away from their child or sibling as well as a reading lounge and library. There are also 2 special “Scream and Splash” paint rooms, available to everyone actually but mostly used by siblings of disabled children, that are especially sound proofed and made to be cleaned easily and quickly. These rooms are filled with breakable object and paint or other splashable objects that can be thrown about without regard to consequences. They may also be used as large painting spaces and the wall and floor covered with paper canvas that the painter can take with them when they leave.
A gourmet quality kitchen and dining facility is open 24 hours a day to feed everyone and ensure each camper has their required nutritional needs met.
The has an advanced medical facility that includes 6 advanced autodocs and 2 professional doctors to see that everyone aboard stays healthy, takes their required medications and to service anyone suffering an accident or other medical event. In addition to the medical facilities, there is an advanced physical therapy gym that is used to not only help the campers while they are aboard, but to design therapy regimes they can continue once they return home to help improve their health and quality of life.
A fleet of tiny cleaning and maintenance bots handle almost all cleanup, repair and maintenance duties aboard ship. While they are not normally part of the attractions, each has a small animated face and their shells are built to be inoffensive and even cute to most people.

The Wonderland Shuttle is a specially converted diplomatic shuttle for use with the Phillips Wonderland ship. It is designed with disabled users in mind and includes an oversized airlock and wide corridors along with 4 staterooms equipped to handle the special needs users and their families for the short time they are expected to be aboard. Special environmental controls also allow very find control and filtering of the atmosphere. The crew is also given comfortable accommodations in case extended operations are required. In the unusual circumstance where wilderness refueling is required, the shuttle is capable of supporting that, but it’s capacity per skim is relatively small, requiring 45 skimming operations to refill the Wonderland.
