Larger Warships games

Everything i am seeing on 2nd ed indicates that the smaller ships are still better value for money than the larger ships, in fact it sounds like the situation is even more extreme in 2nd ed.

Has anyone tried playing games where certain restrictions are put in place for example. A 5pt battle level game where NO skirmish or patrol level ships are allowed, and at least one war level or above ship must be fielded. May end up with something like a war level, a couple of battles and a couple of raid. Would be a good way to get the Sharlin's, Octurions etc into battle without being at a disadvantage?

It's really dependant on the size of game you play. If you stick to the 5 point raid game, then yes, small ships own it, try something larger and the true value of the larger ships can be found.

In my recent 20 point war level game I lost 14 skirmish ships but no battle ships at all.

This is a fleet game and is best played with a fleet IMHO. 5 points of raid is fine down the LGS or a tourney where time is a factor but it should not be considered the be all and end all, you certainly don't get the best from your ships at that level.

It's a interesting idea. The main problem I would see with it though is many races have their scouts sitting at patrol or skirmish. If the Minbari were an opponent in this setup I would certainly want the option to bring some scouts along to atleast have an attempt at reducing their stealth a little bit

We started something about a week and a half ago similar. We were running short on time and decided to limit the number of ships you could take. We ended up doing a quick 1 Battle game with a 2 ship limit.

Dont forget that the Fleets relaying on Bore side Beams like Narn, Ea and Drazi need to have access to the smaller ships.
Without the smaller ships you effectively take away they're main weapons.
The only way I think you will see larger ships is to make them tougher,
(redundancy anyone?) against crits.
It's sad that lots of small ships are still a lot better than big ones, and as Captain Kremmen said I do think that 2nd ed made it even worse!
