ISA - ship idea

the ISA should have the enfili and valen though i think at raid and battle level respectively to give other choices than WSs. which means you could doa force without any whitestars or variants then.
nolo'tar at skirmish, enfili at raid, valen at battle, sharlin variant at war, victory at armageddon.
although as it looks like no enfili or valen for now guess we better wait for some S&P ships.
Agreed, this is how I'd go with the ISA - they have two canon ships just begging to slot into Raid and Battle PLs and fill out the non-White Star style ships for the ISA.

So there is a Sharlin variant at War? ;)

yep, but then you would know that if you actually read the whole of the preview in S&P43 instead of picking at things you dont like and complaining about them ;)

Now, now, gentlemen.

The obvious question for this ship is 'Why?' - what would you seek to use this 'Ranger Capital Ship' for that doesn't fall into the job description of the White Star Gunship - which if you want a manourvable, dodge-and-adaptive-armour equipped laser boat, is basically what you're going to end up with (or a larger version thereof).

Try describing a role that the Rangers might want to carry out first - bearing in mind the various White Star classes and the Victory destroyers, that they can't currently fulfill.

A lightning-cannon testbed is a possibility; something not too dissimilar to an uber-solarhawk/firehawk....but don't expect such a warship to carry anything else...and yes, you would still get a power failure. I think it's fair to say that the only way you avoid the power failure associated with firing a lightning cannon is 'be the Vorlons'.

This will probably go double in 2e due to the Quake-esque emergence of Quad Damage.

Must admit I'm looking forward to Quad Damage - I hope it's restricted to Armageddon level and above though! (and hopefully to Vorlons, Shadows, Ancients and the Victory's lightning cannon)

I think that's what Matt said... it's only on 4 weapons and 3 of them have "lightning" in the name? Something like that, anyway.

thats really going to hurt, I have lost a Hyperion and Marathon in recent games to single shots from TD weapons, Quad damage will murder them! (admitedly, both ships lack any real damage soaking potential!)

I'm sure the ADs will be adjusted downwards to compensate for higher damage multiplier.

(Making them a worse weapon, but never mind that right now...)

Yes, but it's a question of STYLE.

Supposedly 3 of the four have the word "lightning" in the name and I'd probably bet that the fourth has the word 'slicer' in it (unless we're also including the ancient-level ships in this)

I think that the ISA needs a decent Command ship at War level that can keep up with the White Stars and Gun Ships, but also has anti-drakh capabilities built in. Going with that, something like this would be a better fit:

ISA Ranger

Speed: 12
Turns: 2/45
Hull: 6
Damage: 35/5
Crew: 45/8
Troops: 3
Craft: 3 Thunderbolts
Special Rules: Adaptive Armor, AJP, Flight Computer, Self-Repairing 1d6, Command +1, Interceptors 3
In Service: 2270

Weapons:
Improved Neutron Laser rng 24 F 4AD Beam, Precise, SAP, TD
Molecular Pulsar rng 15 T 10AD AP, DD, Precise, Anti-Fighter
Fusion Cannon rng 18 F 4AD AP, Mini Beam, TL
Fusion Cannon rng 18 A 4AD AP, Mini Beam, TL
Fusion Cannon rng 18 P 4AD AP, Mini Beam, TL
Fusion Cannon rng 18 S 4AD AP, Mini Beam, TL

How about a Command and Control style ship with much less weapons and Scout - save them using the "rare" Vree ones - they are only rare cos ISA keep borrowing them?

Something for Sheridan et al to stride about on the bridge looking worried about the actual ships flying into the battle!?

or not

the sharlin variant is their C&C ship. but that will become more apparant when you see it. if you want a warship almost as agile as the WSs then thats the WS carrier.
