Improving Adventurers...

I have never read or played Runequest in the past and have just purchased this version of Runequest and read through it.

I have slight confusion over the improving adventurers section. Does the GM give out Hero Points and improvement rolls or when it says improvement rolls it means using hero points for improvement rolls? It is somewhat confusing the way it is written. Especially if you just read the section Improvement Rolls and Hero Points together on page 94. They almost are describing hero points and improvement rolls as two seperate things, but it makes more sense if they are using the two terms interchangeable.

Any help would be appreciated.

Therey are two separate things. Yes it would have probably made more sense to make them one and the same. THe Hero points and assigned improvment rolls are both new to RQ.

I suppose a GM could combine them into one thing, but then he would have to upp the costs of lengendary abilities (say dobule) to reflect the greater number of Hero Points the character could potentially earn after an adventure.

I guess what confused me as I was re-reading it again was that they jump from talking about improvement rolls to hero rolls in the same paragraph.

The first paragraph under Improvement Rolls it says, "Skills and Characteristics are increased through the use of improvement rolls." The next sentence starts talking about awarding hero points. The next paragraph then talks about giving out improvement roll awards.

Kinda threw me for a loop.

I think it makes sense now.
