HG: Question for Mongoose on Missile Upgrade Options

SSWarlock

Mongoose
Here's a question for the writers of HG.

Can the upgrades for armaments and screens also be used to upgrade missiles and torpedoes? If yes, are there any that can't be used for missiles and/or torpedoes?

Per the first paragraph on the RH column of page 53, it refers to weapons, without specifying beam or missile. Additionally, missiles and torpedos are listed in the TL table on the same page.

I would say that YES, you can upgrade missiles and torpedoes just like beam weapons. So you could have high yield missiles doing extra damage etc. :D

The SHIP design wouldn't be affected, but various missile options are now available from your local arms dealer...

I pondered the same areas of HG while waiting for a reply to my post and have come to the same conclusions.

Man, I'm really liking Mongoose's version of Traveller.

yeah me too. While a lot of it is rehashing the old books, which they have to do to lay the foundation, there are these little gems buried in there that make you go WOW, why didn't I think of that for a house rule?

I think an OGL with some additional upgrades for TL and additional items for starships would be very cool.

I think a stealth upgrade for weapons is needed. Makes those missiles and torpedoes harder to hit due to advanced stealth technology applied and better heat control. There are probably a lot of others.

One assumption I'm making is any modification that can be/is applied to a missile can also be/will be applied to torpedoes. I make the same assumption for barbettes vs. turrets.

Examples:
1. Torpedoes can be classified as "smart" (great for any craft which doesn't/can't carry dedicated gunners..like light fighters) and/or long range torpedoes. Damage for LR torps is -1 on each damage die regardless of warhead type so LR kinetic-kill torps do 4d6-4, LR nukes to 6d6-6, etc. Acceleration and endurance for LR torps are the same as for LR missiles.

2. Barbettes can also be mounted in a popup configuration. Like smaller turrets, required tonnage and price are doubled.

'Nuther assumption re: missiles/torps..the Resilient option applies to the launcher only, not any missile.

Edit: With the release of the Darrians supplement, the Resilient option is shown to be applicable to torpedoes at least.

Pardon my asking but not fluent in HG by any means so this inquiry made with that predication accepted.

Are there any non-HG guidelines for non-military vessels to mount torpedo launchers or 'adapt' HG weapon systems to said ships ?

The best example I might give is shown in the film, Soldier of Fortune (1955), Chinese junk owner Clark Gable has a 20mm cannon mounted in the ship's lower deck giving his little ship a string to discourage pursuers.

Another film reference might be the deck-mounted torp launchers on the fastboat as seen in Deep Rising (1998), turning the agile vessel into a very toothy gunboat.

Again, accepted and understood no merchant or privately owned starship can stand toe to toe and slug it out with a dedicated naval (HG) craft but defending against pirates or other small scale engagements might warrant such armament.

A number of merchants that ran in convoys became armed with deck guns and/or anti-aircraft guns during WWII.

There has also been some non-lethal weaponry mounted on some modern cruise ships to discourage pirates off the coast of Somalia. It works.

By the way, it was a Long Range Acoustical Weapon, not just a "bang".
