GURPS Conan, anybody ever play this?

So I was surfing the net and came across an image for GURPS Conan. From what I can tell the 4 adventure books that were made for this, like Moon of Blood are solo play adventures? I bought 3 of the adventure books from ebay for fairly cheap and am just curious, can I get by with just the main book or would I need to buy the GURPS core book or something to get any use of it, other than inspiration? Was their anything this game did exceptionally well for presenting the Hyborian Age? I have to admit, it doesn't look good that L Sprague De Chump's name is on the main book, but is the rest of it worth a damn?

I never owned the adventures, but the book might be interesting to look at. Admittedly, it is full of "pastiche"-derived information (like, playable races include a sort of satyr, S'tarra they call them, IIRC; serpent people; primitive men).
There are also information on how to adapt GURPS skills to the setting, plus a mass combat system which works quite well.
There is a chapter on the summoning of demons, and how to build them (much like in Stormbringer), plus a list of spells with the "right" flavour (but most of the spells are in the generic GURPS magic supplement anyway).
There is also a small bestiary, and an appendix with the stats of some notable characters.
If you can find it cheap (around 5-10$ ) and if you like GURPS, I would say go for it. Otherwise, save the money.

Hmm, yeah, the main book isn't going cheap anywhere I can find. Thanks for the input. :D Anybody else know about the adventure books? Were they any good?

First of all: hi everybody, it's my debut in this forum although i've been visiting it for quite some time now.

Yes, I know the solos and I'm very fond of them. They keep the atmosphere of original Howard's stories pretty well and provide much fun as games. They sure are worth buying and occasional replaying as well.
Furthermore, if you don't care to get into GURPS itself, they're fully playable with that freely downloadable miniature GUPRS rule booklet (3ed.), whose name eludes me at this moment.

If you are a fan of GURPS you would find it almost does for that system what Conan did for the D20. However since its generic, its not so genre specific . Its more of a guide to what rules to use to portray the characters, magic, beasts, religions and countries of the Hyborian Age.
Back in the day it had the most information avaliable and it was what my players used for years. Wouldnt hurt your collection if you could pick up the core rulebook (GURPS CONAN) for cheap.

I've never played GURPS before. My interest in these books is primarily for mining ideas for my Conan d20 game. Sounds like the individual adventures are the way to go. Hopefully there are no satyrs in those like there are in the main book. :?

I'll check out GURPS light for any interesting rules gameplay.

If you're looking for ideas, you can simply read the corresponding Conan stories - it's a lot faster that way. Actually, all that the adventures add to the originals is several new monsters and for those it'll be enough to just skim through the appendices.
Luckily, no satyrs included.

GURPS Conan has been for a long time the best Conan gaming ressource available. That is until Mongoose version came out.

I never used the GURPS system (which I don't really like) for Conan gaming, but the book was generic enough to serve as an Hyborian Age gaming sourcebook for any system. Even today, you can still drag useful information from it.

The solo adventures had on the other hand little interest outside "Conan Collecting". As Jacek stated, it's better to read the original corresponding stories.

If you happen to speak german, try the german translation of GURPS Conan - they corrrected and added a lot of the Conan Background by the aid of a Conan "specialist" :)

GURPS Conan is for GURPS 3 - GURPS is a very good and logic system, we played GURPS Conan for some time and it worked quite good. It should not be too difficult to get both books 2nd hand on ebay.

Haven't heard of that translation. I take it it's a fan-made work. Is it available online? My German's pretty rusty now but I could always give it a try.

Nope, once upon a time there was a professional GURPS 3rd Edition ... but many long winters have past since that time and the wolves howl now at the cold fireplaces of German GURPSists.

I own a copy of GURPS Conan but did not know that the German one was something special. DRATS!

Other than that I gmed it about 10 years ago - maybe 2, 3 adventures. Wasn't too sucessful with it. Combat is all right (but deadly) but Magic is a joke: My NPC-Wizard conjured a green globe of some unnatural deadliness (which took an eternity and a half) and then throw it at one of my players - and hit! Oh the humanity, oh the dread ... ehm ... one HT-Roll later the STUNNING effect was gone and all was nice again for the barbarian.
The Deadly Duel of the Dreadful Mages was waged with spells and curses - till one took a quarterstaff and hit the other in the belly. End of that fight.

Nah, wasn't too impressed.

Mainly for the hell of it, I plunked down the $50 to get the main book from a second-hand dealer online. This after convincing myself not to plunk $50 for 3 Champions books. Ah well, I'm a Conan fan and I'm curious enough about this RPG to try it out. So now the waiting begins. When I get the book I'm planning on running myself through the 4 solo adventures I've got. Crom help me.

I played all 4 solo adventures for Gurps Conan. The best of them IMO was the 1st, Conan the Wyrmslayer whelly like the first scene where Conan on a horse charges alone 15 guys (with Gurps Rules!). It's really like in the book. The rest isn't bad at all with a great system to make up for the cave system (and no time to remember or to draw where you go or where you went).

Conan and the queen of the black coast is quite faithful but I did'nt like it so much.

The other two are a small campaign against Picts and traitors. Great ambiance but it wasn't as awesome as Conan the Wyrmslayer, especially because of the 1st which wasn't particularly good.

Overall, I'd recommand them all to every Conan fans because it shouln't be difficult to convert it to the new game system and play it with 1 GM and 1-2 players.

Ugh, the internet dealer I had purchased the main Conan GURPS book from refunded my money and canceled the order. Dammit!

Not cheaply. The most affordable copies I can find are on eBay for the 1st printing and either have damage to the cover or pages are falling out. Can't get a PDF from Steve Jackson games either. :-\
