glorantha and regional lore

Hi,

I usually do a culrural region, and then enforce a modifier for sub-groups. Frex Regional Lore (Seshenela), gives you a good area overview, but to know about the Malkioni of that region I would implement a -5% (unles the player was a Malkioni in which case it would be +5%) Modifier, to know about First Age Basmoli of the region a -40%.

Unless they play a mercenary, or noble, or educated character, about 1-2 days travel. Thats it. Thats how big the world is - unless they are nomads. Tribes, cultural differences, enemies, poor roads, and the need to work to survive on a daily basis for most professions bind them pretty much to a region, town, city or otherwise, unless they are merchants, pedlers, or vagabonds. I just can't see a Dara Hapan knowing (or caring) more beyond the world than his town, city, or village then what travelers bring to him (beeing similar to japanese in their outlook on clan, family, and ones place in society, or so I think). No news, no TV, no planes, and cooped up priests that are busy doing priest things. No shopping malls either...:)

hm, I was originally going to use a country, but a large city, or a good chunk of land seems to make sense.

I may just give them a few points now and again to put in lores, as they explore, to save a bit on hte advancement rolls.

I'd say 'it depends' on how you're going to use it.

The effort required to gain the skill shouldn't be significantly greater than the gains from having it or vice versa.

Personally, I see it as a 'nice to have' skill rather than a life and death thing, so more like a modifier on mission success ( after all, most people are unlikely to be especially good and they get by ). So a reasonable area would be required. Give modifiers for being in areas that are 'close to home' or regularly visited.

eg. Safelster Lore ( + 20 Kustria )

Warhammer does it kinda like that. You have "Common knowledge" of a particular country, and then get a bonus based on the specific province.

Hm, I'll think about it a bit before saturday
