Mating Behaviors and Sexuality in Traveller.

It looks like a Hall & Oates album cover In Space.

Some years ago I think MWM said something like 'no sex in Traveller ever'.

In a world of furries, otherkin, and quadrobers, his prescient statement has been a steadfast bulwark protecting Traveller against those who would drag it down into the abyss of Wattpad adult fanfic.

As you know, sexual drive is one of the strongest instincts among the animals known to us. In the world of Traveller, however, we encounter numerous fictional species of sentient beings.

I wonder how the mating cycle looks for species like the Aslan or Vargr. Do Vargr, originating from canine ancestors, experience something akin to estrus? How does it manifest among the Aslan? Or the Droyne? Does the game’s lore provide any insights into this?

And what about interspecies relationships? From what I recall, only the Luriani have effectively resolved this issue (and the Hivers, but that’s a different story). How does the Third Imperium view interspecies relationships, whether between humans or between entirely different species?

Are there political movements beyond the Solomani and Vilani advocating for the "purity of a given race"? Apart from the Luriani, which human subraces can interbreed and which cannot?

Anyway, back on topic.

After considering the question, I'd have to say whatever happens IYTU. The reason is that no one knows how the Ancients manipulated the Vargr, and the Aslan are an alien species. What we do know is that they have kids, so something's going on, and that they are gender-integrated. What I mean by gender integrated is that there are males and females on space stations, ships, and so on, and it doesn't cause enough of a problem for those species to stop having integrated crews. This suggests that females aren't incapacitated by whatever reproductive cycle they have, and that males aren't trying to fight each other or otherwise failing to do their jobs regardless of which stage of the reproductive cycle females are in. In other words, it's not a big deal.

As for interspecies relationships... that could be a reason the Solomani fought an all out war against overwhelming odds to get out of the Imperium.

Droyne have three sexes/genders
Humans/Aslan/K'kree/Vargr have two
Hivers only have one

Note that in original CT it said:

"A NOTE ON GENDER AND RACE
Nowhere in these rules is a specific requirement established that any character (player or non-player) be of a specific gender or race. Any character is potentially of any race or of either sex."

I'll remind everyone that this is in the set of books that allow for only human characters. It was also a way of saying not to be racist or sexist.
So, we can extrapolate that this means that any charater can be of any species, sex/gender and ethnicity without it affecting what the character can do for their career or adventures.

It did not say your character was human...
the word human only occurs three times in LBB:1 '77 edition, once in the streeetwise skill, once in the computer skill, and finally in the Traveller's Aid Society benefit.

So yes, a referee could easily say that any character can be of any race and any gender that exists in their universe.
