Drinking and , well anything....

Over in another thread an example uses a character who is drunk. I realized I had been winging the impact of recreational drugs and alcohol in my games and the only rule I know of is in the Dilettante book. Of course maybe I missed others, but it made me think, why isn't this covered in the Encounters and Dangers section of the CRB?

Should it be?

Although it is not specifically covered, I feel being drunk could be treated as a disease or poison. Alcohol poisoning. Similar for drugs.

If a character is possibly so drunk that the GM thinks it may effect their abilities, an END check or checks depending on how much they are drinking, may be needed. GM would have to decide when, after how many drinks, a roll is needed, what the effects are, and how long they last. Things like 1d or 2d temporary "damage" or reduction of Dex and being so drunk you pass out seam likely options for being drunk.

Just curious, why wouldn't we just use a rule similar to the one from the Dilettante book that covers alcohol as one of the drugs in the list?

Not saying your idea was bad, just curious. :D

I was basing this on the beta core rules as written and not taking into account other books. Which now you're making me go look up so that I know what your talking about!

Sorry, didn't mean to hand out homework.

Ok, the table on page 77 of Dilettante has alcohol intoxication –2 Dex for 2 hours. Certainly a GM could use this.

Are there any rules for cumulative effect? Can someone get fall down or pass out drunk? On page 76 it mentions "mildly intoxicated" and "heavily intoxicated" for social interaction only.

Pg 74 says that the negative effect of "Intoxication" assume one dose and that taking additional doses when the character is already under the influence increases the intoxication penalties. So I would read that to mean drink enough and the -DEX would get so high you are stumbling down drunk. As for pass out, that would be a GM call based on the rules as I read them. Don't know for sure though.

I don't think this is something for the Core :)

However, I will say that when my players indulge in drinking contests, they decide that opposed EDU checks are the way to go, with DM-1 applied for every failed check. First to roll a total of 0 or less loses :)

Drinking effects coordination and intellect together : DEX, INT, EDU.
Your endurance END should help or hinder against its effects.

Tentatively I suggest a strong drink would provide 1D+2-END DM hits against DEX, INT, EDU. If INT or EDU fall to 0 then all checks have a bane. If two characteristics fall to 0 then the character is unconcious.
Intoxication hits heal at 1D+END DM per hour after you stop drinking, unless you are unconscious in which case you remain so for 1D-END DM hours before intoxication healing restarts.
Medical care can recover 2D+END DM +Medical skill DM per hour.

With as many games I have played in that either stat in a star port bar, or end up going to one during the adventure or end up having a drink with a potential patrons, I would have expected it is a core concept.
