Conan and Kids

I would never tell another parent that they should or shouldn't play Conan the RPG with their kids. That is their call. I've played Conan with my oldest but not my youngest. But I have played the Star Wars RPG with my youngest and we had a great time with an adventure on Tatoine. Plus we have played HeroQuest and other type games before.

With my oldest the nudity issue never came up, even when he was creating his character. The excitement of adventuring in Hyboria was firing up his imagination as he had read Howard's Conan stories before we played the game. Howard's prose can be much more imaginative to a young mind then a mere painting of some woman's breast, like in the Conan 1st edition printing. I do think if his friends wanted to play, I would've called their parents and explained the game to them - and the nudity on the pages - before allowing them to play. That didn't happen as his friends have no interest in roleplaying - like most kids it seems. :(

You can never be sure that happens in a RPG played by teens. I know of a group of teens whose campaign was full of sex and nudity, but in a mature way. And there are adults who cannot behave mature in a RPG.
You want an example? Here is it:
The worst GM (~30y) I've ever met!
GM: You see a beautifull girl. Make a self-control check!
Player:  Okay. (rolls) Failed.
GM: You rape her!
Player:  :x

WOW!!! That's ridiculous!
But seriously, I think that a game is a game, and people can play it however they want to. I personally feel that the Hyborian Age setting and the Conan milieu is a mature one, and meant for mature readers and players. I don't think children are able to fully understand or appreciate the works as they are presented, and if the game is to be played true to form the same would apply. So, no one under drinking age for my campaigns!!

I didn't laugh... it made me wonder if the GM in question was someone with mental and/or social issues?

Ummmm............here in the 'States its 21, but even that doesn't necessarily mean anything! I've met 15 year olds more mature than half of the rednecks who vote in this country  , but its a good general rule for myself and the people I game with that no-one under 21 will be involved!

I laughed, I cried, I kissed hope for Mankind good-bye!

In Conan, we have been double-blessed with sex and violence. For those who think Americans are uptight about sex and not about violence, I would point out that the young and impressionable types (If you believe in that sort of thing) are far more likey to act out on sex than on violence. There are about 750,000 teen pregnancies each year in the US. That means at least 1.5 million kiddies are getting their freak on. How many are getting it without getting knocked up? Double that number? Five times the number? This number a a lot more than any violent crime number in the same group but people freak out about violence just as much as about titties. :)

It's up to the parents and there are cultural differences between the US and the rest of the world. The fact is that pushing sex on the TV and in movies causes far more acting out than violence. Some of us like a little of both, and here we are on the Conan forums. :)

I have played campaign with sex and nudity, but I never impose a self-control check on a PC unless that PC suffers from insanity or some player chosen character flaw. That is, if your character is manic rapist, your have to make a Will save to avoid raping women when the opportunity presents itself. What the hell kinda game your playing? FATAL?

Player: Shocked Mad Evil or Very Mad

To be honest some women ive met and seen seem to have that sort of effect on me, i never act on it but all of a sudden all my words are now "ug" and i have a funny feeling i should be holding a club. :P

That's not a fact at all.

Mainland Europe has more nudity/sex on TV than the UK and the UK has more of it than the US.

However Mainland Europe has less of a teenage pregnancy problem than the UK and the UK has less of a problem than the US.

So the simplistic argument would be that "pushing" sex/nudity on TV and in the movies lowers the "acting out" and in turn the teenage pregnancy rate.

However I accept that it's far more complicated than that.

There's something about British and, to some greater extent, US societies that cause the "acting out" and the resultant pregnancies.

In case anyone sees this as "bashing" of one culture or another as I've hinted at above I see British culture sitting somewhere between the US and mainland Europe. Personally I don't either side of the scale as intrinsically better and I'm quite happy where I am.
