British Subs

Reaverman

Mongoose
What colour are British subs, I've only found B&W pics. The look like they are Dark Grey, but they could be black (since a lot have been shown after they emerged and have a lot of reflective surfaces).

Cheers for future help,

Reaver:)

Don't bother. Just put a tiny little plastic pipe on a piece of water-coloured card and say it's the periscope :D

(Other than that -sorry, can't help :( )

Actually, roughing up a periscope or conning tower half-submerged would be pretty awesome...

I think our subs were dark grey or black, but I'm not sure.

LOL....LDTD if the periscope is say 12" across (a very big guess) at 1:1, what you going to use for something 1:2400 :P

The Subs are ferkin tiny

Considering subs can act without actually being detected, that's not such a bad idea...

I was considering creating 'submerged' subs somehow myself...

reaverman,

I would go with a fairly standard battleship grey.

Found this pic of a british minelaying sub called Lembit which is at the estonia maritime museum:-

Just a rectangle of water with a wobbly shadow, or a small periscope and wake... or just a rectangle of water with a few straight lines of bubbles travelling in the general direction of the enemy...

Actually, torpedo markers would be damn handy considering the mechanism used for them...

...he says, mysteriously...

I've been down there....the guy who runs the Seamine place is barking :P

As for the subs, kind of thougth they were. Just wanted to double check :)

So far today, I've painted 5 U Class subs, and the only thing that is taking me so long to paint is the base on them :P

If you hunt long enough you can find all sorts of RN submarine schemes, including light and dark greys for home waters, deep blue for Mediterranean, brown for some Mid East ops and some rather nifty three tone green camo schemes for special forces ops in the Far East. Most of mine are either overall light or dark grey, or light grey with dark grey horizontal surfaces.

Stronghold Miniatures do nice torpedo markers in their 1/600 range.

[intrigued] Ooh, they act like ships with a limited turn rate, then? or do you get to pre-determine their solution at launch? Hopefully it's not just straight line + set move rate per turn [/intrigued]

That was the ORIGINAL idea...

Curious, I guess you just pick an end point for your torpedos within arc and range, and the target has a chance to react to the torpedo trails he can see moving each turn? Effective if you can fire a decent spread...

I guess the arc thing would be a bit sketchy... but then unguided torpedos can only really be considered effective within a certain angle on the bow (or launching point).

Ok, not wanting to start a big debate here about little details, but curiosity does get the better of me now. Has any provision been made for torpedoes set to run particular patterns or the early homing torpedoes employed by the Kriegsmarine and USN?

But it doesn't deal with late war marks of torpedo, which apparently had sensors for terminal homing... hrm.

Damage rolls will be interesting, too - again later mark torpedos with magnetic triggers were designed to explode under the keel and break the back of the ship. Oh, the possibilities - I wonder how an ACTA based AD/damage system would deal with this? Just by giving late war torpedos the precise trait?
