BF Evo, future weapons

That's a point.

Wonder how much it costs to produce that gun by the way?

Speaking of by the way, noticed that this page is only Kristovich and Hiromoon posts? I think we do have to much spare time on our hands

Umm..folks, seriously, there's one being tested at Aberdeen right now. It punches through tank armor like a hot knife through butter. And because it uses magnetics to propel the round, all I have to say is 'What recoil?'.

Well some guy with a wig, called Newton. He stated "To every action (force applied) there is an equal but opposite reaction (equal force applied in the opposite direction)."

Sure there is, but seeing as it's a magnetic force, where would the recoil be?

And speaking of furture weapon systems:

Here's the laser cannon:

Meet Zeus.

And something from the US FCS program (check it out on google)

The round has to be propelled, its creating resistance. It does not matter if its gas propelled, or magnetically. The gun has to move the object down the barrel, and as it does the objest is going to resist. Effectively, its as much as the shell is moving down the barrel, as its the barrel moving away from the shell.

If you unbolted a maglev track, what would happen to all the magnets?

Depends...are they still supplied with power?

And yeah, that's a huge laser. It's used for anti-mine and anti-IED purposes at the moment.

So long as its standing still, like a mine, it works :p....How does it detect the mines then?

Hiromoon - am not saying that the vehicle isn't getting whole truckloads of cash to get on with the development and tests. It's just the technology is still in such an early phase it'll take years to make it a seriously considered option. Even more before all the quirks and details will get worked out enough to make it ready for mass-production. Therefore I wouldn't hold my breath for the railgun, at least not in the immediate future.

Btw that reminds me a funny story about packing whole wades of cash and research efford into radiation-blocking paint :D

It actually detonates the explosives with the use of the laser. They'll probably expand its roles to anti-personell and anti-light vehicle later on, but it's in the test phase right now.

Umm... Wouldn't it be cheaper to just send a group of detector and spade armed guys?
I mean, they're more reliable and most probably be at hand, unlike a specialised vehicle...

Volunteer testing subjects, anyone?

Makoto, are you willing to toddle out towards an IED or land mine to do that work or are you going to hop in the Zeus and the explosive with the laser? Besides, it's had a great success rate.

There's been rumors of Iraqi insurgents in Falluja that got voulnteered... though, in all honesty, there hasn't been more than rumors.

The "or land mine" part was a big hint  . IED = Improvised Explosive Device.

Well... If my choice is to find volunteers or wait a month or two before a suitable vehicle can be brought down into the field...
The choice is simple - you two, grab knives and start clearing the path!

Seriously though - imo such vehicles are too few, too far to be considered a normal mean by poor grunts in the field. They usually have to do without.

There's only one of these vehicles in existance (as far as I know), but suppose if these vehicles were more common place. What's nice is that these vehicles are air transportable. You can load it up in a C-130 and get it anywhere in the world if need be.
