Better Name for Torpedoes?

Mithras

Banded Mongoose
I don't like torpedo, and heavy missile (although better) is a bit of a mouthful. To me they look like the size of modern ballistic missiles, but in Traveller combat, they aren't ballistic. Some kind of ship-killing name would be cool, but I can't think of a single designation for these 2.5 ton monsters.

Can you?

Spear
Javellin

Mark I/II/III etc?

Perhaps the moniker should be on what type of missile it is such as a nuke, homing, heat seeker, etc...

Could even address it by the name of the ship that launched it such as Lancelot Homer or one of Lancelot's spawn is off and running... you could even let your PCs resolve this... though why their enemies use the same name might make an interesting session in itself!

Leafing through TransHumanSpace, I quite like AKV Autonomous Kill Vehicle, which is itself taken from the US Air Force's Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicle. Both sound quite nice!

The torpedo or EKV warheads would include the Kinetic Kill Warhead, Nuclear Warhead, Ground Attack Warhead and X-Ray Laser Warhead....

I tend to go for the "drone" nomenclature with something in front to show what type it is. A torpedo, in my mind, is relatively "dumb" - guided torpedoes seem to be a sea-going missile!

Heavy/Long-Range/Orbital/...
Attack/Strike/...
Drone

etc
:shrugs: Maybe I'm too simple. :D

How about...

SHIVAS* (pronunciation similar to that of the name of the Hindu god of destruction)

*Semi-autonomous Homing Interception Vehicle, Anti-Ship

You can have various classes of SHIVAS. For example, Reaper-class is a nuke.

Nice!

I generally prefer "Heavy Missile", but, in the spirit of "Combat Wasps" (ok, not really the same thing as a Trav torpedon) how about;

Fiery Falcon
HellHawk
HeavyStriker
Eagle of Death
DoomDeathDart (sounds like a Goth band)
LongLance (if the ship is made in Japan)

Egil

Homing Autonomous Weapon Carrier

HAWC.

Light, heavy, long range (slower multi stage very very long range), assualt (short range burnout drive very fast and hard to stop).

Contact nukes, detonation lasers, capacitor lasers, ECM units, drive disablers, recon packages.

A basic shell and drive (types as mentioned above) pluse a mission variable payload.

"Helm bring us in to point blank range. Guns I want a full salvo of Heavy HAWCs loaded and ready, drives to assualt mode. Fire at 1,000km. Lets see all that fancy point defence stop these. Mwahahahahahahah."

Close Range Automated Projectile.

Close Range sort of defeats the whole point of the long range missile/Torpedoe being used against targets beyond energy weapon range.

Nil points for this one

A load of Close Range Automated Projectiles?

I like calling them Bob.

I like this terminology the best.
Here are a few categories.

Laser guided Bob.
Laser guided Big Bob.
Long range Bob
Long range Big Bob.
Smart Bob
Dumb Bob
Nuclear tipped Bob.
Multi war-head Bob (or Hydra Bob)
Armor Piercing Bob
The mother of all Bobs.
And last but not least a man-portable shoulder fired small munitions version, kneel and Bob…

For tech levels above 14, the weapon systems are much more sophisticated so they are referred to as “Robert”
For even more sophistication at TL 16 and higher, they are referred to as “Robert” but with a French accent.

Given the quality of engineering that exists at/above TL16, I wouldn't go with French. I think it'd be the Old High German Hruodberht, meaning "bright with glory" (a compound of hruod "fame, glory" and berht "bright").
