Battlestations: Midway (Xbox 360)

Soulmage

Mongoose
Picked up this game last night. Haven't had too much of a chance to play yet, but the graphics are gorgeous!! Probably worth picking up for that reason alone!

Anyway, as I get to play it more I will post more info.

(It allows for surface, air, and sub-surface combat!)

Check out the Fighting Steel project.

There was this game Fighting Steel that came out a number of years ago. Apparently, there are some folks working on updating the graphics. The stuff they've gotten done looks pretty good.

Anyway, I'm sure you can find it if you google it. You can get a CD for about $10 I think.

If you want a casual "I've got 10 minutes to play" game, go to www.apezone.com and check out Battleship Chess.

Its WWI era surface combat with a fun, not-too-serious motif. Quite addictive!! Definitely not a hard core wargame, just an entertaining naval-based diversion.

I did check out Fighting Steel, but from what i saw the graphics are terrible (I have a bad case of 'outdated graphics syndrome' where I attempt to play old games and then either get sick(physically) of the shaky graphics(I guess nausea?) or just get really pissed at the quality and get angry...), and there is no way to update the graphics.... I am still pretty interested in it though, and will do some further research later.

I have the PC version, fun game so far.

Rumor complete enough secret missions to unlock Japan campaign.

You're not the only one. A few weeks back I was rumaging through my basement and came across a box of PS1 games that had belonged to my brother-in-law. I never owned a PS1, but I do have a PS2 so I figured "Hey, free games. Cool". Boy was I surprised. The games were just terrible. Bad graphics, poor controls overall blech. Could these really be the same games he had once spoken so fondly about? Sadly, they were and it was just an example of how far things have come since those were considered "cutting edge".

Let us know how you like it. Does anyone know of any good PC surface combat games?

I have Harpoon, Destroyer Command, Great Naval Battles,
Deadly Waters ( PC )

Warship Gunner & Warship Gunner II ( PS2 )

Try eBay for naval wargames keyword search.

Well, I downloaded the fighting steel demo... yuck.

In addition to outdated graphics that made me want to barf(physically, apparently I got nauseous or something...), I had to put up with a rather non-responsive camera, horrible default camera angles, ridiculous glitches that would make me crash to desktop, and a general lack of responsiveness from my units.

I tried playing several times. First I tried a mission in the Atlantic. 3 German cruisers against Norfolk and Suffolk(I played Germans). All was going well to start, I increased speed to 29 knots, and then the lead ship in the line made contact with the enemy. I set gunnery orders to whatever, and ordered the use of AP rounds for all 3 of my ships. I saw my ships fire a total of 3 times, while I must have seen countless salvos come in from Norfolk and Suffolk, especially when we were so close to eachother that any secondary guns that I might have had(but didnt...) could have been brought to bear at point-blank. Then I thought, HEY TORPEDOS, and attempted that, and crashed to desktop....

I tried that one again.... this time avoiding torpedos, and deciding to try to change my course.... which never happened because I crashed to friggin desktop when I hit the compass...

Then I tried a Jap v. American scenario, with Kongo and some other assorted ships against a group of smaller American craft. I played Japs. I was like, oh Battleship, I can sorta live with this! But I encountered the same problems. Not shooting when I ordered them too, not turning when I ordered them to(I was able to use those turn arrow things in the middle of the compass, but thats about it), even when I chose the targets, when they did finally fire, they either missed, or scored direct hits which seemed to do absolutely no damage to the enemy (Kongos forward guns against an American destroyer, I saw 4 explosions from my shells, meaning 4 hits in my mind, but 0 damage to the destroyer) at which point I got pissed and uninstalled the game... well, I tried torpedos again first, but then crashed to desktop AND THEN uninstalled the game...

After that, I checked out Enigma Rising Tide and Silent Hunter 3 and 4, but unfortunately, I don't think I can run any of the 3 games, despite my interest in them.... and there doesn't seem to be a Surcouf in any of the 3 games...

Found an Enigma demo, fun fun stuff. However, it seems that the company that produced it has folded, and there will be no further updates to it... bummer.

Well, campaign seems short, no skirmish setup to create ad-hoc battles
with the different units, only multiplayer is the xbox live pay service for
on-line play, and worse of all verrrrry overpriced for what you get from it.

Nice calendar with pin-up girls in poses...but not worth $60

Wait 1-2 months for the disappointed to return their's and buy it for $10.
