BABYLON 5 SCRIPTS

Volume 15 will have, among other things, the original metaplot for B5 written before filming anything. It is how the story WOULD have gone if actors had not left the show, the network hadn't wanted changes and they weren't threatened with cancellation every season.

THIS is what I really want to read!

I have enjoyed reading JMS's intro's to each episode and then rewatching the episode as I read the script. Some times they are very similar, other times the filmed version is quite different than what was originally written.

I have really enjoyed this series of books and I recommend them to anyone interested in the "behind the camera" workings of a TV show.

Well Vol 14 went on sale last night.

IMPORTANT: If you already have Volume 1-13 and you're going to order Vol 14 make sure you have filled in the proof of purchase form already. That way you'll get Vol 15 along with Vol 14.

Latest update that I heard from the JMS newsies is that each Volume 15 (the special one that can only be gotten if you have all the other 14) will be personally autographed by JMS himself. No scripto thing, he will personally sign every single copy!

JMS is just insane

Just look at his records. First writes 2 complete seasons all himself(and apart from one episode also 3rd) and now this.

Insane! Just insane!

Yeah, he may be insane, but how about that Fan Support!

Since the very beginning of the B5 project, JMS has been incredibly open and loyal to his fans. I remember some stuff early on with Sinclair leaving and Sheridan coming in. He took a lot of heat from some psychofans who were convinced that he was lying, but I never saw that myself. He has been honest and forthcoming and truthful and open about everything on the show. He has even admitted when he made mistakes and how he would have done it different if he could do it again.

Also, if you get the chance, read his books (currently out of print). Othersyde is AMAZING. It is a horror story, but he explains WHY the evil ones are evil, and of course, they don't think they are evil (sound familiar?). He also mentions B5 in the story and it was written a couple of years before the pilot was filmed.

(gushing fanboy mode off...)

Awesome ;-)

Didn't read his mails back then(didn't have internet back then, heard of B5 only about 4 years later when B5 ended in America and arrived in Finland) but been reading his archived posts lately. Quite interesting reading they are.

Wish I had been able to follow the serie when it was made but of course being in Finland that was impossible(it came to Finland I think ´98...Or was it ´99?).

I was in college finishing up my Master's Degree and had access to the Usenet sites via the college computers.

I even got a couple of replies from JMS, he was always very nice. Of course he was also very frustrating when he would drop hints about what was coming.

I think his writeup on what happened with Sinclair at the end of Season 1 was incredibly honest and well written.

He was also able to make the most incredible flame attacks (after being up 20+ hours) when some idiot would attack him. It would build like a tidal wave and crash over the poor sap. Of course the next day he was all apologetic about getting personal, but it was some amazing reading.

Never noticed that someone made an offshoot of my name. Haven't been on the Mongoose site in a while though. That and I'm not really intrested in Traveller or Bab 5.

I didn't mean to use your name, but I expect that the source was the same.

I picked back when Mongoose Traveller had just been announced and RTT was one of the acronims being thrown around for the new version of Traveller.

Not upset or anything. Now if you did Rikki Tikki Tavi without the "-", people might get confused.

I just received Volume 14 and 15!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Volume 15, the special one signed by JMS contains the following:

Babylon 5 Original Treatment
Babylon 5 Writer's Bible
Production Draft for "The Gathering" with Handwritten Notes
Alternate Draft of "And The Sky, Full of Stars"
Infamous Lost Draft for "Soul Hunter"
Practical Joke Script Featuring G'Kar and Londo as Lovers
Memo Describing the 5 Year Arc With Sinclair Still Present
Joe Cuts: Inventory of Variances Between Scripts and DVD

Comes in a red cover (rather than black like the others).

VERY COOL

Can't wait to read all the goodness!

Got the despatch notice for my Vol 14 today, and a few days ago the warning email that while the despatch notice only mentions 14, 15 would be in the same box.

Take a week or so to cross the pond.

Volume 14 and 15 came bundled together as a single post (but in 2 separate book boxes taped together).

I have FORCED myself to read volume 14 before I jump to 15, but it is very difficult. I have been waiting for the original idea stuff since I first heard about it back during the initial run of Season 2.

MUST USE SELF CONTROL...

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just read JMS's original arc that had Jeff Sinclair stay for the full arc. Without reprinting the entire 10 page arc, here are some of the highlights.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is "essentially" the same, but in many ways very different. Sinclair and Delenn get together (as you might expect).

BUT, in the original arc, B5 is destroyed BY THE CENTAURI at the end of the first 5 years and the arc ends with everything falling apart and the Shadow War in full swing. Or, as JMS once said, "Babylon 5 was built as a way to prevent the next great war, it failed."

A follow-on series titled Babylon Prime would have taken up the story for another 5 years which would have seen the end of the Shadow War and the formation of the Interstellar Alliance. The Alliance would have been lead by Sinclair's Son, not by him though.

Also, Babylon 4 did not go back in time and Sinclair did not become Valen. B4 was pulled FORWARD in time and became Babylon Prime in the second series...

When you compress both 5 years arcs into one, you can see that at the end of the day, things were about the same, but MAN what a different ride it would have been!

Now, I have to go back and watch the first season all over again and see what of this alternate arc I can pick out! SO COOL!

Sorry about that, but I DID use a spoiler break, so hopefully you didn't read too much... I left out a LOT of other detail stuff though, so I didn't give away everything.

The "gag script" is pretty good too. The actors who played Londo and G'Kar pulled a huge practical joke on Joe at one of the conventions and TWO YEARS later he got them back by putting in some scenes that have G'Kar change sex and seduce Londo. It was kinda weird to read, but when you read Joe's comments on how the cast and crew reacted, it is HILARIOUS. Two years plotting revenge, I don't EVER want to cross that man!

Oh I wasn't damning you for the spoilers, Iread them intentionally, I was damning you for having your copy when I don't

Fraggin' International shipping times, shouldn't be more than a week now, hopefully tomorrow though.

Got this in my email today:

Complete your Babylon 5 Scripts collection with the scripts from the Other Voices.

Watch your email box next week for complete details.

Seems they're doing one or 2 volumes to mop up the noon JMS scripts.

Now they need top add Crusade and the TV movies and LotR and we're done.

Hadn't seen that yet. I'm glad to see that at least some of the other writers are willing to use this POD method. I'm sure the sales have opened some eyes.

JMS said in one of the early books that he was hoping to get some of the other writers to allow their scripts to be published, and he hoped to do the same for Crusade.

The nice thing about Crusade is we might actually get the Arc for that show. Obviously 1/2 of a season was not enough to get a feel for where the show was going; imagine trying to figure out B5 after only 1/2 of a season, we were SO wrong. The only thing I remember was JMS saying that the plague would be cured early in season 2, so there was a lot of show that we know next to nothing about. I hope he does it.
