Are the models pre-painted? Plastic?

Are you talking about the new, unpainted plastic mechs for CBT?
You do know that those only come in the starter box, right?
Almost ALL CBT models are metal. Always have been. Always will be (though I wouldn't mind better quality plastic, again a la GW; it would keep the price down).

As for prepainted plastics, I like to use them as vict- er... NPCs in RPGs...

Essentially they completely and utterly changed how the game is played. It went from a small skirmish game (where you needed half a dozen to a dozen minis) to a full army sized game (needing some tens of minis) to play.

The pre-painted minis did not overly bother me as Rackham planned for them to be oversprayable and repaintable. The massive and sweeping rules changes did however. In a broadly a similar way to GW's 'next/revised/revisited/reduxed edition' it meant that the minis I own are now insufficient (or in some cases useless) for the game.

Pre-painted minis do not float my boat but everyone is different. I have a friend who is into gaming but is not so hot on the modelling side. He would probably pay a premium for pre-painted stuff.

I think that as ACTA grows, there will be room for both. The big question is whether Mongoose feels that the market justifies the investment. Personally I would only be annoyed if there were shiny new models only available as pre-paints. I would probably end up painting over them anyway.

The good news with GW games is that you can still use the minis no matter how old they are. Just need to keep buying books...

Which can get pretty expensive. This is the 3rd major rulechange for WHFantasy since I started playing in 2000...

A lot of the 40K models have been invalidated, though. Vehicles and troops get different weapon options in new versions, so the old models become useless under the now-mandatory WYSIWYG rules.

Like you said, pre-paints are usually nasty. Soft, bendy plastic and those God-awful hex bases. Urgh. Kid's toys. Give me a proper model any day, even if takes me more than 12 months to paint it...

Ok but what is with the other peoples who canot paint in sutch an still? Or have not the passion for glueing a mis mouldet metal model together?

give me metal miniatures all the time. the lines are sharper, you get better mould quality and they last for longer.

the ONLY plastics i rate are the GW plastic sets even if they are overpriced (personal opinion)

I was actually quite intrigued with the idea of pre-painted plastics until I actually saw them. the Battletech clickies looked awful when compared to metal, the BF-EVO should have been sent back with note attached saying 'now do it right'. I have yet to see a set of pre-painted plastic minis that I would be prepared to use instead of metal.

Having said that, I picked up a set of 5 pewter figures from EM4 miniatures a while back and they werent too bad. Nicely priced too. I forget what game it was for.


anyways, pre-painted plastics as a whole need to improve in mould quality and painting standard before I ever use them.

As for B5ACTA plastics........ do what you want, just dont ever stop developing the metals range.
