Alien Modules Zhodani and Darrian...

Darrians (quite soon!), and then Zhodani at the bottom end of this year.

This is great news. At least IMO. Since I am playing a Darrian character and dealing right now with the Zhodani I look forward to seeing the mongoose version of these books. I'm wondering what kind of changes will be made from the CT versions.

Darrians will have an average of 8 fingers and 2 thumbs, with 6 fingers
and no thumb on the left hand and 2 fingers and 2 thumbs on the right
hand ... 8)

So no change then?

Seriously, I have no idea. I think that Mongoose's Darrians will look a
little more different from other humans than Darrians did in previous
versions of Traveller, in order to make it easier to distinguish future
Darrian miniatures from those of mainstream humans, but otherwise
I have no clue.

Physical features don't concern me much. I was actually wondering about the changes in the alien module itself, but thank you anyway. :-)

The original had dreadful editing, so I'm really hoping that will change.

In all honesty, the Mongoose Traveller books have not been too successful in keeping out massive editing errors itself. I keep hoping the next book they put out in the series will be better, but...
Personally I wouldn't put my name in them if I edited the books since most of the errors are so embarrassingly simple, they should not have been overlooked. At least the first printings.

Ahh well... It'll be nice for another review for both races...

Althought _I_ would be more interested in what Mongoose has in store for say...just picking a time range at random... 1107 through 1110... (whistles innocently)

And Deadmike... you're nae all that dead... A bit of Monty Python in there somewhere... (But I could see you more as the Black Knight...)

Take care

All of the alien modules have been pretty good so far. Aslan had the major SNAFU, but I haven't noticed anything in Vargr. They seem to have higher art quality and production values overall.

I love the Darrians. I treat them as the Ancients in MTU, complete with Darrian scientists jingoistically trying to prove it true.

I'm looking forward to this.

As am I; given the artwork they had in one of the S&Ps I'd like to see what modifications they made.

I am very much tempted to strip the Darrians of most of their Third Im-
perium setting background and use them as the descendants of a "lost"
early colonization attempt in my setting.

"Lost Colonies" with inhabitants that reverted to a neo-barbarian techno-
logy and lifestyle are quite common in the science fiction, so a "Lost Co-
lony" with inhabitants that actually are more "developed" than their ori-
ginal culture could perhaps make for an interesting change.

I like the idea of a Lost Colony for the Darrians. Hence maybe move their actual homeworld away from the Marches... and have a BG feel to it. The Darrians who originate in the Outrim traveled across the vast expanses of space to settle on Darrian and then quickly recovered their tech when the Turks came. Didn't I tell you, I was influenced by Elfquest...

Seriously, as much as the idea has much merit Rust, you cannot have the Darrians then being the Israelis of Chartered Space, if you go with that idea. They become something quite different. But, is it only me, but I am noticing a trend of depolitization of the major races...it struck me as odd in Aslan and I saw it again in Vargr. While, no race in Traveller should be Evil they still ought have a way of life that guides them not merely a racial code that can just be adopted into a Character template.

True, but this would not hurt in my non-OTU setting. In fact, the existence
of a highly developed human nation on the remote frontier of my setting's
explored space would even increase the opportunities for diplomacy and
politics, because many of the frontier colonies could be more than willing
to trade their relations with far away Earth for good relations with a po-
werful new neighbour, and Earth could not do much to stop them.

A (not very good) historical analogy could perhaps be the Spanish colo-
nies in South America, which were looking for good relations with the com-
paratively near USA to gain more independence from far away Spain.

But I am not yet sure whether to use the idea, and how to handle it. :D

Personally, I'd keep them as being the pointy-eared elves of Traveller.

Then again, my MTU, Grandfather's Ancients weren't the only ancients around, in my MTU it was a five-way war between Grandfather, his proto-Droyne offspring, the Vorlons, the Rakata Infinite Empire, and the Shadows.

Hmm, okay, MY head hurts now, too....

Darrians are IMHO best retconed to be about 90cm tall, with huge feet, blue skin and a preference for white pointy caps. Oh and a severe male:female imballance. Singing silly songs (often together with an elderly bard) is optional.

After that the Sword Worlds definitly need to be rendered as 200cm tall, red/blond haired, muscular guys (and beautiful but muscular blond gals) wielding double bladed "Bonded Superdense" axes and having horns on the helms of their combat armor. Having tham curse by "Thor and Odin" a lot and calling any warship a "longboat" is optional.

Sorry but...

HELL. NO.
