Yep. B5war is great for putting you on shoes of ship captain. ACTA is great for putting you on shoes of fleet commander(admiral? Whatever).
I don't think they compete with each other per se. They are aiming for different scale of action and both do it nicely.
I agree that it was a game of ships not fleets. The problem was: what happened if you wanted to play EA vs Minbari. The Sharlin, for example, was way more than an Omega, but not double. I seem to remember the points balanced out at like 3 omegas vs 2 sharlins or some such. (couldn't tell you, because I tossed the books) So in order to get a balanced game, you ended up using multiples.
Yep. There was little book keeping involved as current speed had to be kept in memory but nothing serious.
Again, respectfully beg to differ. There wasn't much problem manuevering
as long as nothing went wrong. Because you had a limited set of "thrust points" from your engine, but only a certain amount of thrust could be put through each of the four aft engines of the omega (yes this is all true), once you suffered damage you could have to "over thrust" and roll to see if you damage the 3 thrusters still working.
Then you could have a port thruster destroyed, which meant if you wanted to make a starboard turn, you simply couldn't.
Then you could have your prow superstructure destroyed (happened a lot), and so you couldn't slow down...
Then there was Electronic Warfare that you had to decide at the start of every round...
A lot of times, it felt to us like we were playing the rules and not each other. There was simply a lot of record keeping and dice rolling before we actually got to shoot at each other.
Bottom line is what do you want? Do you want a beer and pretzels game? Then B5W was NOT for you. If you like starfleet battles, then it was okay. Personally, I like beer and pretzels games, so ACTA was much more exciting.
