Adira

This is great if you want to fight one or two ships against another one or two ships but it takes a LOOOONG time to play even small games. Big ones take forever :P

Yep. B5war is great for putting you on shoes of ship captain. ACTA is great for putting you on shoes of fleet commander(admiral? Whatever).

I don't think they compete with each other per se. They are aiming for different scale of action and both do it nicely.

The turning rules incidentally were actually pretty straightforward. You simply had to move a certain number of hexes before you could turn depending on your speed and maneuvering ability. It got a little complex when you had to channel thrust through specific thruster systems but such is life.

Yep. There was little book keeping involved as current speed had to be kept in memory but nothing serious.

Nad heaven help you when you attempted a pivot and roll and lost thrusters, now that was almost hilarious trying to sort that out

Of course, attempting that whilst you're already pivoting and rolling...maybe even throw in an accelerate and slipslide :)

I agree that it was a game of ships not fleets. The problem was: what happened if you wanted to play EA vs Minbari. The Sharlin, for example, was way more than an Omega, but not double. I seem to remember the points balanced out at like 3 omegas vs 2 sharlins or some such. (couldn't tell you, because I tossed the books) So in order to get a balanced game, you ended up using multiples.

Again, respectfully beg to differ. There wasn't much problem manuevering as long as nothing went wrong. Because you had a limited set of "thrust points" from your engine, but only a certain amount of thrust could be put through each of the four aft engines of the omega (yes this is all true), once you suffered damage you could have to "over thrust" and roll to see if you damage the 3 thrusters still working.

Then you could have a port thruster destroyed, which meant if you wanted to make a starboard turn, you simply couldn't.

Then you could have your prow superstructure destroyed (happened a lot), and so you couldn't slow down...

Then there was Electronic Warfare that you had to decide at the start of every round...

A lot of times, it felt to us like we were playing the rules and not each other. There was simply a lot of record keeping and dice rolling before we actually got to shoot at each other.

Bottom line is what do you want? Do you want a beer and pretzels game? Then B5W was NOT for you. If you like starfleet battles, then it was okay. Personally, I like beer and pretzels games, so ACTA was much more exciting.

Or using scenarios :-)

Or adding smaller ship or two to mix.

And in any case it didn't require 1 to 1 duels for ease of play. I think my first game was G'quan, 3 T'Loth(one was transportation duties only though), full compliment of fighters vs Primus, 2 vorchan and demos.

Was playable.

You didnt have to play exact points matches, and for that matter you didnt have to play with 2 Omegas, you could use for example, 1 Warlock (close to Sharlin in points), 1 Omega 1 Hyperion etc etc.

And also 1 Sharlin was cheaper than 2 Omegas but 1 Sharlin plus all its fighters on the other hand.....

(actually that was my most common trick to balance the points, just vary the number of fighters you carry (fighters were EXPENSIVE in B5Wars, but for good reason, they were NASTY....)

The reason the adira costs so much is coz it's FLAMING HUGE, it's FLAMING HEAVY, and I reckon if I threw it at someone [I've pinned mine] I could bludgeon them to death, and still pick up an intact adira battleship.

I love it!
