What would you take?

If you were playing 5 War points of Vorlons and you knew you were going to be fighting the Shadows, what would you take? Is there any defense against 20 Shadow Scouts when playing the Vorlons?

Sincerely,

Andrew Norris

5 Raid points worth of heavy fighters. MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Whos more manueverable now then?!?!! (and best of all theyve still got beams so can pin the buggers :P

in fact, I could be wrong but I think 5 war points works out to about 180 flights of fighters..... (1 War = 12 patrol = 12 wings = 36 flights

Probably another important question to ask - is it a straight fight or a specific scenario with relevant winning conditions?

Oh and Go Shadows! 8)

Personally I'd take the 20 Shadow Scouts against the 180 Vorlon Fighters. The Shadow Scouts have accurate weapons and can outrun the Vorlon fighters if need be....

It is just a straight up fight. The last man or encounter suit or hardwired person, wins :)

5 war points?

Take 2 light cruisers, 4 destroyers and 36 fighters.

Set up a pillbox of Vorlon death with the cruiser in back and the destroyers up front. Make sure you all stop for a turn so you can all stop and pivot the next.

The first two two turns you will outrange him so pop as many scouts as possible at range. When they get in close they will be worrying more about your capital ships than fighters. At this point capital ships should just be all-stop pivoting. This is when you take your fighters and jump 4-6 scouts making sure they are out of any scouts firing arc. Be very careful with your fighters because they could disappear quickly if used improperly.

You also have to consentrate fire on targets to kill them, this is much better than damaging a few ships heavily because: Shadows regenerate, killing ships limits return fire, and shooting at the same ship helps with overcoming stealth roles.

Follow these rules and crush shadows under your feet.

He has 20 Shadow Scouts. Why are you feeding Vorlon fighters to the 8 inch 6 AD guns of SAP, ACC, DD Shadow Scouts? Seems like an easy way to lose VPs and the battle along with it. And you were right the first time. 1 War nets you 12 Patrol, which for 3 Vorlon Fighter flights per wing, brings you to 36 fighter flights.

Against 20 Scouts, you could be equally lame and just drop 40 Vorlon Transports on the table. Good game, Shadow player.

Personally, I'd go for 2 Light Cruisers, 4 Destroyers, 8 Transports. Gives you 14 ships to his 20, and the Vorlons have the massive superiority in firepower and survivability. Stealth shouldn't be too big, with the +1 to Stealth Ancients roll reducing the Shadow Scout's stealth to 4+, and since he has to close to 8 inches to fire, somebody's going to be getting a 3+ stealth roll against the Shadow Scout, and then it'll be promptly beamed to death. He has the advantage in maneuverability and initiative, but is hampered by his complete lack of ranged firepower, forcing him to close range with your ships, negating his stealth advantage, and reducing his chances of outmaneuvering your fleet by avoiding your fire arcs.

Feed fighters to the shadows?....are you kidding. Shadows have no anti fighter and only one arc weapons, fighters move after everything else so position them behind or to the side of the scouts. If you do it right fighters are the bane of shadows. If the shadow player covers his arcs that means he is taking fire away from your capital ships for antifighter because of the fear of the fighters and therefore don't move your fighters in. Fighters are also awesome for helping with stealth roles.

Fighters eat shadows for lunch and the only shadow ship you must be caseful of is the scout.

Except that, in the case of this battle, the Shadow player is apparently only taking 20 Shadow Scouts, which would mulch through the 36 flights of Vorlon Fighters, leaving your four Destroyers and two Light Cruisers to fight off the remaining Shadow Scouts. Sure, they'd cause some damage, but they'd get wiped pretty quickly too. At best, unless the Shadow Player is a bumbling idiot, you'd only get two, maybe even three, and if you're incredibly lucky four Shadow Scouts before he annihilates all of your fighters.

Yep. A goodly plan.
