I think you put way too much thought into what BFE is.
But to give you a better idea:
IT'S FICTION!
Doesn't matter if it's just 10 years into the future, 100 years into the future, or 40,000 years into the future. BFE is a work of fiction just like Clancy novels, fantasy games, or scifi mass battle games are.
It's fiction.
So, why does it matter if it's not a true modern game? Why does it matter exactly why these four armies are all fighting each other? Why does it matter if certain countries are allied that wouldn't ally? Why does it matter if certain countries are fighting that wouldn't fight?
Well, you answered your own question: "A "Near Future" game allows creative license". That's why the game is set in a near future setting, not a modern setting, and not a realistic setting. Frankly it just sounds like you want a modern game and are complaining that a newly released product doesn't watch what you want.
And for that matter, what's with all those weird one liners that you need to translate? "This dog won't hunt"? I mean, of course it's too outlandish to be taken seriously, so don't try to take it seriously.
Wah wah wah about the minis is all I've been hearing. I'll wait to see them in store before I decide to buy them. And for that matter, that's all there is to it. There is no greater morality and good vs. evil philosophy behind the sales of miniatures of questionable quality. I'll take that stance about the issues afflicting the world today, but when it comes to miniatures, if I don't like them there's plenty of other modern manufacturers to cover the core BFE units, by then I they'll either have fixed the production issues or changed factories.
