Vegan (no, not that kind...) characters

It says FIRST CAREER. It does not say FIRST TERM.

Vegan Terms are 16 years. In the category "CAREERS" it says they must choose Drifter for the first one. Either Scavenger or Wanderer, not Barbarian. It then says after their term as a Drifter, they can attempt to qualify for another career. University is not a career. So if you are going to say that they can't do pre career education because the first career is the same as first term, then you have to say that "may then join another career" means they can't go to pre-career options then either. In that interpretation, which I don't agree with, Vegan universities are the scholar Tuhuir.

If a Vegan leave any career besides Drifter, they have to roll a 10+ to continue in character generation at all.

Vegans can be in Agent, Citizen, Drifter, Entertainer, Merchant, Scholar, or Scout careers without modification. They are -2 to enroll in Rogue career. Noble, Army, Navy, and Marine careers are allowed, but have some different event tables compared to human careers.

Honestly, I think it's likely that unless there's some other rule about it, the "first career" text was just sloppy writing and the intention was that they always do a term wandering first before looking at other options. Which might include later term University.

Given how long their terms are and the built in +2 EDU, it's not unreasonable to assume they attend an appropriate educational course for several years of any career they join. Or that University education follows their equivalent of high school in almost all cases and just forms part of their background stuff. Universities can exist without it being a specific career option, and training can be provided to students who are also working full time, or as part of their employment.

I tend to think that any military academy is inherent with those careers and not something you can just do, fail and go do something else from. That doesn't feel very Vegan. So I'm good with that pre-career option not being available.

Okay, I just discovered something relevant.

The MGT 1e Solomani Rim product has essentially the same text for Vegans as is later used in the 2e Solomani Front book. Makes sense, not much changed between the editions to affect it.

Except... 1e did not have the pre-career options. So in Solomani Rim, the rule that "A Vegan must choose drifter as their first career." was unambiguous.

It seems to me that the oversight here is that the 1e text was copied but should logically have been changed to "A Vegan must spend their first term as a drifter." Or, and possibly simpler, just disallow pre-career options with study at higher learning institutions being something that happens organically during careers, either in Scholar or when rolling on an Advanced education table. I am fully comfortable with their military academies being integral to the Guardian streams.
