Viewing Battleship memorials using Google Earth

Now here I'll make this a bit of a trivia test for you. What battleship is this, perchance? I know, but do you?

Is it the Utah ?

Search in the Norfolk harbour , you can find a lot of aircraft carrier.
In Murmansk you can find the Kusnetsov.
And a lot of other thing

Uriel Ventis has the first answer, as well as the correct one! Very good! Poor old Utah, reduced to being a training/target ship and then reduced to wreckage at the bottom of Pearl Harbor. It's interesting that it and the Arizona were left as war graves, probably due to the great damage to the Arizona and the lesser war value of the Utah. You would still think the "parking spot" might be useful to clear away use for, as the US fleet carriers usually moored there. The attacking Japanese thought she was indeed a carrier because most of the guns had been taken off as well as additional deck timbers added to act as a mobile practice target ship for inert aircraft bombs. This actually saved other ships from absorbing even more damage during the Pearl Harbor raid as bombs and torpedoes were expended on the Utah that might have caused many more deaths and damage elsewhere. Although almost salvaged in the 1950's, it stands today as a permanent war memorial with 58 sailors entombed.

Bu Ships is it by any chance the Utah?

I'll bet you didn't see the previous answer, which beat you by a few hours  , but you are indeed correct as well! If I ever get a chance to visit Hawaii and see the Arizona, I'll try my best to see the Utah, but I believe the area is not as open to the public as the Missouri and Arizona are. I think it's for Navy folks, iirc.

WOW..this is like spying, I mean there are subs and all sorts here....before anyone puts their penny in...yes I know it public domain, and yes I know it might be from images 6-18 months ago :P!

Reaverman, are you seeing these alright? I mean, do you find you have to re-center the images? Here is one site that serves as a beginning point of reference if you want to dig up your own submissions here. It's great fun!

Oh yeah I found them, but you can also wander around the ship yard find other things like Subs in dock :D

Oh yeah, I did that too- very fun indeed. :D

A couple to add to the list....

USS Massachusetts (BB59 - South Dakota Class)

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=...682,-71.162916&spn=0.001966,0.006738&t=k&om=1

Next to it you can see the destroyer USS Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. The picture isn't that great, but you can find a lot better ones by going to http://www.battleshipcove.com

Thinking of the USS Constitution, here's an ariel shot of old ironsides herself

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=...198,-71.055796&spn=0.000973,0.003369&t=k&om=1

I believe the destroyer next to her is the Robert F. Kennedy but I'm not sure.
Check out http://local.live.com/ for a pretty good bird's eye shot of the ship.

Thanks, Obsidian. I didn't really want to do them all, and I sure was whittling down the choices fast. I found the destroyer USS Turner Joy in Bremerton Washington, USA but put that in another thread (go figure).
BTW, the ship you are seeing next to the sub is too short for a destroyer (based upon my past knowledge), so I looked the museums web pages over to find what it is. I did not know the USA had been captured by the soviet navy as I don't read the newspapers much  , but the small short ship next to the Massachusetts is a Soviet-built missile frigate! What a find you have shown us there, as I didn't know about the ship. It seems the frigate has served in at least three navies (is that a record?): built by the Soviets for the East German Navy as the Rudolf Eglehofer, then serving with the Federal German navy as the Hiddensee until decommissioning in 1991. It was reactivated and transferred to the US Navy as a research vessel until budget cutbacks in 1996. In 1997 it joined the Battleship Cove "fleet". The Balao class sub next to the missile frigate is the USS Lionfish. They also have examples of both a Higgins and an Elco class PT Boat (MTB) and a Japanese suicide boat. I'd sure like to see that museum some day. Although it doesn't "really" count, they have the bow section of a late-war US Heavy Cruiser as well. The DD next to the Constitution is the WW2 USS Cassin Young, restored to 1950's appearance. Thanks again for the links! Fun stuff, all around.

The "Hiddensee" is a Tarantul class Fast Attack Craft (FAC). Wifey and I toured the ship in 1997. A fascinating ship which highlights the differences in design philosophy between the West and the FSU. a pity the tour guides couldn't appreciate it at the time (they pointed out some aspects as "daft" whereas thery fitted the vessel's operational profile perfectly!)

There is another one on display at the Peenemunde museum in Germany (also well worth a visit!)

Maybe the pictures are correct and you are just a figment of your own imagination?

Of historical interest in this shot - the dry-docked vessel to the right of Ark Royal is the preserved monitor M33, of WW1 vintage (and desparately in need of funds for restoration)

Well it's in good company, with Ark Royal on one sde and HMS Victory on the other. I didn't know about the ship, and just did a bit of research. It's got to be close to holding the record for a ship being ordered, built and launched: ordered- March 15, 1915, launched- May 22, 1915, commissioned- June 24, 1915! Wow. Somebody was in a hurry, I'd venture  . The ship is a veteran of Gallipoli, as well. I'm impressed, and it sure deserves restoration. Here is a better view-

I was wondering about that one at work today - clearly it's not going anywhere fast!

Speaking of cool ships to visit - The U-505 exhibit in Chicago is pretty awesome. They moved the WW2 German Sub indoors a couple of years ago to protect it. They have tours inside the sub.

more info can be found here:

Thank you Dave. I remember the story of U-505, and have wanted to visit it in Chicago for many years. I'm glad it is inside now and more protected for future visitors to view it. I read a little of the info on the website you linked to, and it occurred to me that if you want to successfully scuttle a U-boat you might want to remember to take the strainer cover with you topside and throw it over the side  . Thank you again for the link!

That reminds me (did I already ask this?), what's going on in Trafalgar Square in Google Earth? OK, granted, it's way off topic for the list... but at least it has a (tenuous) naval link...

Well, because it's called "Trafalgar" I'll let it go by  . So, give us the link, already :!:

I have no idea how to link from Google Earth... If you actually have Google Earth installed, just do a search for Trafalgar Square...

I did, and I got ten results just in the UK itself. In the U.S., I found a set of apartments with that name a few hundred miles away from me, lol. I'll try adding "London" in the query, as that should cut it down a tad  .

That's true, assuming you get the same results I do, it's the top one.

Trafalgar Square, Westminster, Greater London, SW1
