Viewing Battleship memorials using Google Earth

"Flex Deck" operations (simultaneour launch and recover) isn't regularly used - the flight deck of a modern carrier is a dangerous enough place - but it is an important capability to have.

I'd have to say I find it ironic that all these improvements to naval aviation come from a county with few, if any carriers!

Has anyone, ever, anywhere, built a carrier with an angled deck to the RIGHT? I remember two of the WW2 Japanese carriers (Soryu & Hiryu?) being built mirror-imaged so they could sail close to one another and have the aircraft approach paths mirrored to keep the formation close.

As far as I know the Japanese were the only ones to experiment with that arrangement. For some reason I can't remember if something went wrong pilots had a tendency to veer to the left, which made having your island on that side of the ship somewhat risky...

And that arrangement sort of stuck. Perhaps Japanese pilots don't have a tendency to veer in either direction (although they stopped doing it and switched back to all on the right quite quickly.)... :?

This is a really cool thread that I think everybody coming to this forum would be interested in. Any chance we could sticky it?

Thanks, Soulmage :D. I did find it to be an inspiring bit of work as I revealed views of them. It's a bit ironic as well because these are aerial views- the same perspective that an airplane would have passing over them, albeit without those little puffs of AA fire  .

Some countries lead, others just follow :D

Sorry

"...the other Canadian ship"??? You guys had more than one? I'm sorry, I'll immediately apologise for that. You chaps did have the world's 3rd largest fleet at the end of WW2 by the way, although that was after all of the 'bad guy' axis navys had been sunk. Canada contributed greatly to the war effort and became critical in escorting the convoys to Britain and Russia. I'm extremely glad that a Tribal ship survives to be appreciated by its visitors. We can't let this history pass into the fog of lost memory and the toils forgotten of those who gave us the freedom we take for granted each day.

That one is HMS Belfast in the Pool of London.

no, thats in Toronto. It might be the Acadia though.... or the Haida before it was moved to its new birth.... (after all I've seen parts of the same city that were years apart on google earth)

Wow.... maybe our history hasn't been totally suplanted by the Americans... yet... :P just kidding.

Thanks for the compliment though.

I'm feeling an inflated sense of patriotism all of the sudden.

Wierd, 'cos if I cliick on the link I definitely get a picture of the Belfast (easily identifiable because of her triple turrets).

Joe_Dracos: Your link goes to a picture of the Belfast in London.

HMCS Haida is currently in Hamilton. It used to be moored in Toronto (at Ontario Place). If you look on google earth the ship actually appears in both places.

Toronto:

The Acadia is an hydrographic survey ship and it is currenty moored at the Maritime Museam of the Atlantic in downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia.

I think this is it here (two jetty's north of the Sackville):

Here's a question - If I go to Google Maps and hunt around for a picture, then try to get a link to that particular image the link doesn't update itself to the view that I have. Any clues as to how I do it?

If I understand you correctly, I think it's because of the extreme zoom (?). When I have tried a view, I choose the closest zoom it allows me. When I save the link, it can shift sometimes to one side. If that is what you were asking about, I do not have a solution. What I've done iirc, was to get the view that I wanted, then clicked "link to this page" button in upper right corner of page. After doing that I save the address location from the browser address and use that to point to it.

I didn't see the old Texas anywhere among the other postings...

I have some family that used to work at the park and both said she's getting really close to needing to be dry docked again. Alas the company that did it last time is gone and apparently they are looking at plans to permanitely land lock her as an alternative.

She is a grand old lady.

That would be a good move. maybe something along the lines of the dry dock in which the Great Britain sits would be worth thinking about (it allows visitors to walk under the ship, which is impressive enough for a small ship like the GB but would be awesome for a BB!)

I had a lovely visit to the Texas in the autumn of 2000 - got eaten alive by mossies though :)

Texas Parks and Wild Life offers what they call Hard Hat tours of the Texas some times. You have to sign up in advance and they only appear to do them a few times a year. Must be a little tough, my aunt told me you have to be 18 to even take the tour. If you get a chance to go you might try to contact them before hand and see it they are offering one.

My Uncle told me when the put her in dry dock the last time she had some pretty large holes in her outer hull. I just realized I never asked him or his wife if they have any pictures from the rebuild.....

I had the Texas listed on the first page, viewed with this link-

Yes, she is sure a grand 'ol girl. I just wish my USS Washington has been saved. It's a damn shame, that. They scrapped BB-3 as well, the Oregon! What were they thinking?
