Vehicle dtons

Evening all,

How much space/volume/dtons does the standard vehicles, primarily the APC or AFV, take up?

I'm trying to work out the vehicle bay for 5 TL10 Wheeled APCs. In the one reference: Land Forces of the World by Christopher Chant I have the dimensions give a range from about 2 dtons to 4 dtons on the ones I've looked at so far.

Hmm. MGT doesn't state a relationship, but just states that Air/Rafts take up 4 tons on a ship and the ATV takes up 10.

There are several ways to interpret this. In past editions, vehicles were assumed to be stored at anywhere from 1-to-1 to 4-to-1. Under CT, the ATV was described as being 10 tons of home away from home.

Taking a page from the Hangar space item in High Guard, as well as earlier editions, you should be able to designate how much space you want for a garage based on desired access within said garage.

For that 2 ton APC (about the size of a large van) you can either have a minimal stowage space of 2 tons, a "just enough room to open the doors and do inventory" space of 3 tons (130% rounding up), a basic maintenance space of 4 tons, or a "take it apart" space of 8 tons.

Honestly. Take your pick.

gypsycomet is right. Take your dtons figure (which is just volume anyway), and if you want a hanger, which I would say would be mandatory for a wheeled vehicle, add 30% to the dton value. I think one thing missing from High guard is an engineering shop. It was in T20 Traveller, but missing from MGT and MGT HG.

When doing deckplans, don't forget to put ground vehicle hangar spaces where they can be used. The dune buggy you so lovingly maintained through jump is going to look pretty bad after you drive it off that 3rd story balcony...

Evening GypsyComet,

Thanks for the assistance. I have always had a slight issue with the dtons of the vehicles in Traveller, especially after looking at the dimensions of real world examples. With your comments I'm beginning to think that the listed volume is for the vehicle plus space to perform maintenance or loading of equipment.

Again thank you for the reply.

Evening mtaylor,

Thank you for supporting GypsyComet and answering my question. Most of the variants really had a limited number of modules. In many cases I'd use the numbers for one module that was a close fit and identify the module as the vehicle repair shop or whatever.

Thank you for the reminder that wheeled or tracked vehicles don't like the sudden stop afer leaving the 3rd story balcony. I'm planning on placing the vehicle hangar behind the small craft hangar, which is on the lowest deck. The APCs would then be able to drive into the holds of the small craft or since the ship is capable of landing drive off and on through ramps.
