We have Uplift in "Wrath of the ancients" and it's a pretty interesting idea. The problem is two fold. 1. By the end of the campaign, you not only have enough uplift talents to pretty much make you a demigod... You also have a closet (solar system sized) full of Ancient tech. There's a reason most of the suggestions for post-Wrath adventures aren't so much "can your players do this" as "thnk about the consequences."
But I think the uplift system itself works pretty well and could be expanded for the following purposes:
1. We know the ancients had uplifted servants, and it's entirely possible remaining ancient tools could, accidentally or on purpose, start that process.
2. There are plenty of organizations who like the idea of "human/hiver/etc+" While not equal to the ancients, they might achieve their own systems of uplift.
And it has the balancing fact of: After Wrath, you really have to be stupid for any existing group to pose a threat to you. Between the technological advantages, the fact that you've finished at least one uplift path, yeah.
But if you start out just starting the process, suddenly, the characters are alone sitting on the most important secret around, and yet they're still weak. And a lot of smart cookies aren't going to want to let them get strong, which is the classic "can you survive on the run" campaign, or for sneaky groups "Can you keep people from noticing."
It's still be a limited campaign, because even without ancient tech goodies, by the time you hit more than one path, you're more or less unstoppable, but I think it'd be a nice campaign.
