Upgraded Fighters

OK, I understand how to upgrade a carried fighter flight from Sentri/Starfury to Rutarian/Firebolt in a one off scenario. I'm not so sure how that works in a campaign, though. I figure you can keep a pool of independent flights and switch them out as needed for individual battles, just like you would for a one-off...but can you permanently replace a ship's regular flights with upgraded flights? For example, if a ship that normally carries Sentris loses some or all of it's carried flights in battle, can a player choose to replace those flights with Rutarians? Would it still cost extra FAP to bring the ship into battle? And of course, the question of ships with the Carrier trait regenerating flights...

I know I've seen a discussion on this before, but unfortunately I don't remember what, if any, conclusion was reached, and my search-fu is pretty much non-existent.

In my group's campaign we pay the FAP for the upgraded fighters.

Yes you can put upgraded flights into a carrier if you wish, as long as you have then on your roster. But when you field the carrier, you should pay the FAPs for the upgraded fighters.

And when a fleet carrier regenerates, I would say it can only generate standard flights, not upgraded ones. It would be quite overpowered to generate free Rutarians or Firebolts.

Agree the Carrier would cost more - but as you are already paying for the upgrade I would have thought they shold be able to generate replacements................especially if you do a total upgrade say and the ship only carries upgraded fighters.......?

You've paid the upgrade price for one wing of fighters. Either pay the upgrade price again to replace them, or the replacements are back to standard. In the case of a fleet carrier recovering a "destroyed" flight, the pilots managed to get their shot-up fighters back to the carrier, but it doesn't carry spares for that model. It does, however, have some entire spare fighters of the regular model which just need pilots, and now it also has some spare pilots...

Another way might be to work out how many upgraded fighters are equal in Patrol points to the carrier's load of normal fighters, give it that many upgraded fighters for no additional charge, then allow it to regenerate them. Auroras are 4 per Patrol point, Firebolts are 2 per Patrol point, so allow a carrier to replace its Auroras with half as many Firebolts.

What are you talking about? As long as it is not an allied fighter you should be fine according to the rules.

This was a subject of much debate  He's referring to the rule that allows a ship with Fleet Carrier to replace lost flights between campaign turns. I think most people (eventually!) agreed that the carrier could only replace standard fighters, but those that required FAP to upgrade (i.e. Rutarians and Firebolts) needed to pay for the upgrades again (no free upgrade).
