Traveller OTU - Loves and Hates

Love:

1. Third Imperium
2. Zhodani
3. Imperial Armed Forces
4. Aslan
5. Vargr
6. Vilani
7. Ancients
8. Nobility
9. UPP
10. Darrians

Hate:

1. Minimal progress of Jump Drives as Tech Levels rise
2. Sandcasters, (although the TL 16 ones in CSC somewhat make up for that. Now we just need to raise Imperial tech levels from 11-12 to 16.)
3. TNE / Virus Setting
4. Grandfather & the Droyne being the ONLY Ancients
5. Plasma weapon tech seems way under-developed for the post-TL 11 tech levels

Ambivalent

1. Grandfather & the Droyne
2. K'Kree
3. Communication Speed equals Travel Speed
4. No Blasters
5. Hivers
6. Solomani

1) The present system seems to work, my players are happy!

2) The OTU is vast and easily moulded in directions to suit the tastes and interests of most groups of players, I've GM'd Trav in various incarnations since the little black box and can honestly say the present MGT version plays the best since the innocent early days of the LBB's.

3) I actually like the limited number of Sophont races, and figure that an awful lot of alien life is likely to be of an 'animal' level or in many cases so alien that meaningful interaction with Humaniti is unlikely. K'Kree seem the most awkward alien race to manage BUT as an admirer of Ian Banks I would point to the 'Hegemony' featured in Consider Phlebus. I think thats a viable way to handle K'Kree.

4) The character generation system and militaristic/action bias seems ok to me, again for the groups I've run, everybody gets a vicarious thrill when the shooting starts be they Mercenaries, Free traders or a bunch of Explorers and scientists.

Dislikes

1) I really didn't like TNE and the whole star viking thing. It didn't convince me as a setting and the Star Viking thang was just so..... EE Doc Smith. Yes ,to me thats a BAD THING.

2) MT was broken, with the expanded char gen etc. That system more than others kinda encouraged ppl into military careers.. just to get more skills.

3) The 2d star maps, I liked the 2300 and Tsr's Alternity star maps, where xy axis were used effectively. But I appreciate the effort that would be needed to create such for the OTU. (I did toy with a Trveller ruleset crossover to the defunct Star Drive campaign setting which I did find interesting).

After that rant, and in summary, I'm just happy to see my 2nd favourite rpg back, in a playable and enjoyable form. Thanks Mongoose.
